(2) £300-500 Provenance: an English private collection, Somerset, purchased in Japan. Legend says that the Shogun Hideyoshi once gifted a famed spear to General Masanori. The samurai Mori Tahei from the Kuroda clan arrived with a message for the General, who invited him to a celebratory drink with him. Mori Tahei refused but Masanori offered him a gift of his choice if he were to accept some sake. The samurai eventually agreed, drank his sake, and claimed the spear. This okimono illustrates the famous song Kuroda Bushi from the city of Fukuoka: Drink, drink sake! If you drink it, you will win the best spear in Japan. And if you drink enough to win it, you are a true Kuroda samurai! 228 229 109

Prince Shotoku Taishi (574-622) was a semi-legendary Crown Prince and Regent to the Empress Suiko during the Asuka period (538-710). He became an important political and cultural leader modernizing the government administration. FROM THE COLLECTION OF VIRGINIA G. ATCHLEY (1911-2013) LOTS 245-249 Virginia Atchley’s name is famous in the American world of Japanese Art collecting. For over forty years, she amassed an eclectic collection reflecting her love for miniature arts, including a large number of netsuke, inro, and other sagemono, in a wide range of styles, techniques and materials. She was actively involved with the International Netsuke Society, first as Editor of the Journal (1985-91), and then as President (1991-93). She received the first Silver Kirin Award from the Society for her ‘Outstanding Contribution to the World of Netsuke’, which was announced during the Los Angeles Convention in 1989, and for which she received a standing ovation. She was on the Board of Directors until her passing in 2013, shortly before her 102nd birthday. The catalogue she produced with Neil Davey entitled ‘The Virginia Atchley Collection of Miniature Arts’ (2006), is a reference amongst collectors, and lists over 400 pieces.
