The intricate detailing and expert craftsmanship evident in the present

lot suggest its possible origin in Guangzhou, crafted as a tribute to

the Imperial Court in Beijing, where a keen interest in European styles

prevailed. During the Qianlong era, painted enamel objects emerged

as exquisite manifestations of cultural exchange between China and

Europe.

Artisans in Guangzhou, situated near European trading posts,

demonstrated exceptional technical prowess in adapting foreign

Rococo styles, resulting in breath-taking pieces that served as

tangible expressions of cross-cultural dialogue and artistic ingenuity.

This vase serves as a testament to the vibrant exchange of ideas and

aesthetics during the Qianlong period.

Giuseppe Castiglione (1688-1766), an Italian Jesuit, left an indelible

mark on the artistry of the Qing court through his expertise in both

Western and Chinese artistic traditions. Arriving in China in the 18th

century, Castiglione seamlessly integrated European techniques with

traditional Chinese aesthetics. His influence extended beyond the

canvas, sparking a renaissance in the creation of painted enamel

objects, which inspired artisans to emulate his style, resulting in a

fusion of European and Chinese techniques that produced exquisite

enamel pieces with European perspective and shading.

mid-Qing dynasty, in the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in

the Compendium of Collections in the Palace Museum: Enamels,

Beijing, 2011, no.234; see also a related painted enamel hexagonal

Notable for its understated elegance conveyed by its perfect

geometric shape and the sumptuous peachbloom glaze characterised

by dark-red flecks, subtly emerging from the attractive peach-pink

ground, the present vessel displays the high standards achieved in

porcelain production by the Imperial kilns of Jingdezhen.

Compare with a similarly-shaped peachboom-glazed washer,

in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum:

Monochrome Porcelain, Hong Kong, 1999, pl.19; see also another

example illustrated in Kangxi Porcelain Wares from the Shanghai

Two similar peachbloom-glazed brushwashers, Kangxi marks and

of the period, were sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, respectively

on 4 June 2020, lot 532, and 2 October 2018, lot 120; a further

Monochrome porcelain wares produced during the Yongzheng reign

were undoubtedly at its apex and of the best quality throughout the

Qing dynasty. Owing to the emperor's fondness for sophisticated

ceramics, several new glaze colours were introduced by the imperial

kilns under the supervision of Tang Ying, apart from following the

techniques from the preceding periods.

For relevant wares with similar light blue tone as the present lot,

see a group of refined examples from the Baur collection and the

Zhuyuetang collection, illustrated in A Millennium of Monochromes:

from the Great Tang to the High Qing, Milan, 2018, pp. 226-232,

106 | Bonhams The present lot is extremely rare in its form and style. Vases such as

the present lot, modelled after the form of ancient bronze vessels

and with guan-type glazes harking back to the renowned ceramics

of the Song dynasty, emerged during the Yongzheng period. See

for example, a related guan-type hexagonal vase, Yongzheng mark

and period, in the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in Monochrome

Porcelain: The Complete Collection of the Treasures of the Palace

Museum, Hong Kong, 1999, p.226, no.204. Such vases became

more rare during the Qianlong reign.

Qianlong vases of similar form but covered in various other glazes

include a sky-blue example, illustrated in Sekai toji zenshu (Ceramic

Art of the World), vol.12, Tokyo, 1956, pl.46; one covered in a

teadust glaze, published in Chinese Ceramics in the Idemitsu

Delicately decorated with phoenix medallions in vibrant copper-red

such as the present lot, are exceedingly rare and it is exceptional

to find a surviving pair bearing the reign mark of Qianlong. Bowls of

this type were under the influence of the porcelain production during

the Yongzheng period, which was the time that the imperial kilns in

Jingdezhen were under the joint supervision by Nian Xiyao and Tang

Ying. The technology of firing the copper-red colouring became more

stable and mature with its bright and vivid colours.

The motif of phoenix medallions painted in copper-red, such the

present lot, were possibly produced from the Kangxi period onwards,

see a prototype but of smaller size in the Palace Museum, Beijing,

accession no. gu00147007. See also another Kangxi example of this

type in the Nanjing Museum, illustrated in Treasures in the Royalty:

This form and design continued onto the Qianlong period, but only

a small number are known. Compare a similar example illustrated in

1995, pl. 81. Another example bearing the Qianlong seal mark, see

The rich and dynamic mottled turquoise glaze characterising the

present meiping exemplifies the technical accomplishments achieved

in producing glazes of remarkable brilliance, colours and texture,

during the Qianlong reign. The simple yet elegant design also

encapsulated the skilful workmanship achieved during the period.

'Robin's egg' glaze was introduced by the imperial kilns in

Jingdezhen during the Yongzheng period. It is known as lu Jun or

'furnace Jun' in China, suggesting that a connection was made with

the Jun glazes of the Song Dynasty, and because it was fired in a

furnace at a lower temperature after the firing of the porcelain.

It is rare to have Qianlong-marked meiping applied with 'robin's egg'

glazes. See a larger vase with a more bulbous shoulder, illustrated

in A Dealer's Hand: The Chinese Art World Through the Eyes of

116 | Bonhams Fully coated in shimmering gold enamel, the present bowl is an

exceedingly rare example testifying to the Qing Imperial aesthetic

taste and to the technical virtuosity of the Imperial potters during the

reign of the Yongzheng Emperor.

Gold was considered one of the most auspicious metals, possessing

an opulence that catered to the extravagant taste afforded by only

the wealthy and powerful. It was also related to the Daoist concept

of the golden elixir of Immortality (literally 'gold cinnabar' jindan). The

process of applying gold on porcelain wares in the Imperial kilns at

Jingdezhen was documented by Pere d'Entrecolles in a letter dated

1721, where he mentioned:

'When one wishes to apply gold, one grinds in and mixes it in the

bottom of a porcelain vessel until a little cloud of gold appears in the

bottom of the water. One allows it to dry and then uses it by mixing it

in a sufficient amount of gummed water. With thirty parts of gold, one

incorporates three parts of white lead, and then one applies it to the

porcelain, just like a coloured glaze'

See Yu Pei-chin, De Jia Qu: Qianlong Huangdi de Taoci pinwei 得

佳趣—乾隆皇帝的陶瓷品味 (Obtaining Refined Enjoyment: The

Qianlong Emperor's Taste in Ceramics), Taipei, 2012, pp.129-130.

The gilding process described in the letter is also accurately

described in the Nanyao biji, a treatise compiled during the Qianlong

period, stating:

'Gilding process nowadays...recipes for gilding and silvery tracery

painting: mix ten parts of gold (one qian), with one part of lead

powder (one fen)'.

After the gold layer was applied to the vessel, a low firing was

necessary to fix it; see A Millennium of Monochromes: From the Great

Tang to the High Qing, The Baur and the Zhuyuetang Collections,

The legend of the Eight Daoist Immortals crossing the sea is a

popular motif in Chinese art and mythology. According to tradition,

these legendary figures possess supernatural powers and represent

various virtues and aspects of life. The story depicts them embarking

on a journey across the sea, often riding on various magical creatures

or objects, symbolising their transcendence of earthly limitations. This

narrative has inspired numerous artistic representations in Chinese

art, literature, and culture, serving as a metaphor for overcoming

obstacles and achieving enlightenment. See a blue and white doublegourd vase decorated with the eight immortals, Qianlong, in the

Adorned with elegantly crafted designs

reminiscent of those employed during the

early phases of the Ming dynasty, this vase

showcases the artisan's meticulous attention

to detail. Inspired by the renowned 15thcentury blue and white wares known for their

distinctive 'heaping and piling' effect, the

craftsman skilfully replicates this technique

by strategically applying darker and denser

spots of cobalt onto the design. This

deliberate approach not only pays homage to

the revered Ming tradition but also highlights

the craftsman's ingenuity in capturing the

essence of a celebrated artistic style.

Chen Guozhi 陳國治 (circa 1820-1860), was considered as one of

the greatest craftsmen of the time, who was a native of Qimen, Anhui

province, and was renowned for his ability to carve landscape scenes

on porcelain with the intricacy and elegance of those found on

paintings. He was active during the Daoguang and Xianfeng reigns

and may have worked for the imperial court. See a yellow-glazed

'Eight Horses of Mu Wang' brushpot, also bearing a similar fourcharacter mark of Chen, previously in the Quek Kiok Lee Collection,

'Hare's fur' refers to the effect of streaking created by the use of

iron-rich composition in the glaze. When the glaze flows and carries

the burst droplets, russet stripes resembling the fur of a hare are

produced. The decorative effects varies with different states of

iron oxide, making the tea bowl a fashionable item and became an

essential in the tea ceremonies during the Song dynasty.
