PREFACE

Nestled by the sea, Wenzhou, a city steeped in history,

was once the capital of the ancient Dong’ou Kingdom. It

is nicknamed the “City of White Deer” because, according

to legend, when the city was being built a white deer

circled it with a flower in its mouth, which was a sign of

good fortune. The unceasing flow of the Tanghe River

has nurtured generations of Ouyue (the name of regional

culture of ancient Wenzhou) descendants, infusing the

essence of Ouyue culture that has thrived for millennia.

This is the cradle of the “Yongjia School of Thought”,

the birthplace of the Chinese Nanxi Opera, the incubator

of mathematicians, and the homeland of over a hundred

folk arts and crafts. Here, the spirit of innovation flourishes,

grounded in deep cultural roots and a broad cultural

heritage. The convergence of the Central Plains, maritime,

mountain, and immigrant cultures has forged a unique

identity and harmonious blend that is distinctly ancient

Ouyue and undeniably modern Wenzhou.

In 2023, a remarkable discovery unveiled the hidden

treasures of the ancient Shuomen Port. As a bustling

metropolis during the Song Dynasty (960–1279), it was once

hailed as “a miniature Hangzhou”, the most prosperous

capital in the world in the Southern Song (1127–1279). This

archaeological marvel, a testament to the Maritime Silk

Road’s grandeur, holds immense value in the annals of

global navigation. As a UNESCO nominee, it enriches our

understanding of ancient China’s maritime civilization,

offering a glimpse into the philosophical and humanistic

spirit of its people.

For generations, the people of Wenzhou have delved

into their roots, drawing inspiration from their cultural

heritage to shape their future. In recent years, Wenzhou,

with innovation seemingly woven into its DNA, has boldly

driven forward with cultural initiatives, highlighting the

city’s deep historical and cultural roots. For instance, the

city has delved into the rich legacy of the Yongjia School

of thought to underscore its status as a historic cultural

metropolis; it has intensified archaeological excavations

at the ancient Shuomen Port ruins to showcase the allure

of a thousand-year-old maritime silk road city; it has

completed the Jiushan Shuhui Nanxi Opera Cultural Park

to highlight the city’s reputation as the hometown of the

Chinese opera; it has leveraged the rich cultural heritage

of the Chinese Communist Revolution to strengthen its

spiritual brand; it has utilized its extensive diaspora as a

bridge to foster diverse cultural exchange activities; it has

built new cultural spaces in both urban and rural areas,

such as “City Libraries”, “Community Cultural Centers” and

“Rural Reading Rooms”; it has developed ten new cultural

landmarks, including the Wenzhou Art Museum; and it

has launched a three-year action plan to revitalize Yandang

Mountain.

As opera melodies fill the air, and Wenzhou's ancient

streets reclaim their charm while historical landmarks

spring back to life. Wenzhou, a shining example of China's

innovation, illuminates the path of cultural creativity. The

city's thousand-year legacy and vibrant modern ecosystem

thrive side by side, propelling Wenzhou forward in a

harmonious blend of the old and the new.

The ancient city of Wenzhou stands as a captivating cultural destination. Its antique charm of the Song Dynasty

(960–1279) culture is palpable in its old streets, while its intangible cultural heritage (ICH) items and the Nanxi opera

performances leave a deep impression on viewers. Leveraging this rich historical allure, Wenzhou is embracing the

“China-chic”infused with Ouyue cultural elements. From fashion and cuisine to cultural and creative industries

and tourism, from products to brands, this trend is permeating the daily lives and leisure activities of Wenzhou

people, reflecting enhanced cultural confidence and diverse fashion sensibilities.

With over 2,000 years of urban existence and over 1,700 years of prefectural governance, Wenzhou has provided

fertile soil for the growth of“China-chic”. The deeply rooted Ouyue culture, landscape culture, and ethnic culture

have given rise to traditional theatre, art, folk literature, music, traditional crafts, dance, and folklore, all of which

are ICH with profound and unique value.

Through ICH exhibitions, opera performances, bazaars with the Song Dynasty flavor, and ancient style

performances, the city offers unique Ouyue cultural experiences, immersing citizens in the“China-chic”with

Wenzhou characteristics.

The“China-chic”is gradually becoming an integral part of Wenzhou’s image. The city’s ancient and

unchanging layout, resembling the Big Dipper, along with the discovery of the Shuomen Ancient Port ruins, add

a unique charm to Wenzhou. Moreover, the Gongyuan Road Historical Block, the Jiushan Shuhui · Song Dynasty

Plays & Saloon Plus Event, the Yinxiu Film and Television Shooting Base that delves into Wenzhou’s cultural

features, the Dongyu Power Plant Energy Museum that showcase Wenzhou’s industrial culture... all of them offer

opportunities for the public to thoroughly experience the“China-chic”through parent-child tours, cultural tours,

and food tours etc.

Wenzhou’s distinct local culture is thriving across the Ouyue land, extending into a variety of industries.

The“China-chic”trend has been incorporated into sectors such as footwear, clothing, smart home products,

entertainment and tourism, and sports events. What began as a fleeting trend has transformed into a lasting

phenomenon, continually revitalizing the connotations of traditional culture in the new era. Characterized by multidimensional expressions of“culture+”and profound cultural inheritance, it will undoubtedly propel the cultural

innovation that allows us to see the Innovation China initiative reflected in Wenzhou, showcasing“the beauty of

Ouyue land”and“the power of innovation”.

Experience Wenzhou’s Ancient Charm

DON YOUR HANFU AND EMBARK

ON A CULTURAL JOURNEY

BY CHENG YAN

Over the past two years, Wenzhou has seen a surge of

the China-chic fashion. Residents and visitors alike may

stroll through ancient streets in “horse-face skirts”, admire

Chinese flower arrangements that blend modern floral art

with mugwort hanging decorations, visit bazaars full of the

flavor of the Song Dynasty (960-1279), participate in funfilled traditional sports games, and savour popular Chinese

medicinal drinks like sour plum soup. Such China-chic

fashion seamlessly blends traditional Chinese elements

with modern trends, drawing countless young people. The

ancient charm of Chinese culture has frequently become a

buzzword.

Wenzhou, with its over 2,200-year history, is a city

steeped in cultural heritage. Its timeless allure has been

passed down through generations, continuously thriving and

evolving. It is the “National Historical and Cultural City”,

“Birthplace of the Yongjia School of Thought”, “Hometown

of the Nanxi Opera”, “City of Singing and Dancing”, “City

of Painting and Calligraphy”, and “Hometown of Over a

Hundred Folk Arts and Crafts”. With the rise of the Chinachic fashion, wearing traditional Hanfu garments is no

longer restricted to important ceremonies or festivals, but

has become a distinctive everyday trend. So, don your Hanfu

attire and explore Wenzhou’s scenic landscapes, ancient

villages with traditional tiled roofs, and historic old streets.

Immerse yourself in the fashionable spots that showcase the

city’s enduring ancient charm.

The Song Garden on the Jiangxin Islet: A Photogenic

Destination of the Song Dynasty Flavor

Jiangxin Islet, a landmark of Wenzhou, is a poetic

place brimming with classical charm, preserving countless

human stories and cultural treasures dating back to the

Song Dynasty. Over a year in the making, the Song Garden

was meticulously crafted with the theme of “Song Dynasty

Flavor”, featuring “six pavilions and one hall”, each

conceived to showcase the humanistic essence of Wenzhou

in the Song Dynasty. Serving as a platform for cultural

exchange and interaction, the garden provides a beautiful

space where artistic furnishings take center stage as the

primary mode of expression. Visitors can experience the

elegant aesthetics of the Song Dynasty in daily life.

The Song Garden, inheriting the legacy of the Southern

Song(1127–1279) culture and continuing its millennium-old

lineage, offers a stroll that feels like a journey back in time.

The garden’s staff, dressed in traditional costumes, perform

incense burning and tea ceremonies, one of the four elegant

pastimes of the Song people. During the May Day holiday

this year, the park offered free boat rides and entrance

tickets to visitors wearing Hanfu, along with themed

activities such as ancient-style fairs and sports games, and

Hanfu parades, which drew a large number of tourists.

Jiushan Shuhui · Song Dynasty Plays & Saloon Plus

Event

Nanxi (the southern drama), the earliest form of Xiqu

(traditional Chinese theatre), originated in Wenzhou.

During the Southern Song Period (1127-1279), the Jiushan

Association of Nanxi Scripters and Actors was established in

the Jiushan Park and served as the hub for the creation and

performance of Nanxi. In May 2022, Wenzhou restored this

site as a cultural landmark named Jiushan Shuhui (Jiushan

Association), covering an area of 38,000 square meters in the

open air, including a stage especially for Nanxi repertoire.

Then Jiushan Shuhui was further highlighted when CCTV’s

“2023 Spring Festival Xiqu Gala” was recorded here,

marking the first time in 33 years that the gala’s main stage

was set up outdoors, propelling the venue into the national

spotlight.

Since the launch of “Jiushan Shuhui·Song Dynasty Plays

& Saloon Plus Event”, numerous activities have taken place,

including “Jiushan Twilight Retreat”, “Theatrical Celebration

of the Dragon Boat Festival”, “Drama Carnival”, “Watching

Dramas to Celebrate the Chinese New Year”, and “Xiqu

Life Fair”. These “Plays +” events with diverse themes have

garnered widespread acclaim. Most recently, a “Wellnessthemed Activity”, which combined the Nanxi culture,

innovative wellness practices, food, and entertainment into

a gala, unlocked the new Chinese-style wellness methods.

Participants may encounter famous characters in Chinese

history, such as the renowned Chinese herbalist “Li Shizhen”

offering medical consultations, the Buddhist monk “Ji Gong”

roaming the grounds, and the celebrated poet and musician

“Cai Wenji” distributing “magic pills”. These interactions

provide not only health advice but also an amusing and

educational exploration of traditional Chinese wellness

approaches.

Baizhangji Waterfall: Popular with Its “Martial Arts

Aura”

The Baizhangji Waterfall Scenic Spot is the core

attraction of the Wencheng Bowen Hometown Scenic

Area. Known for its stepped waterfalls, it features three

sections with long and wide cascades, totaling a remarkable

353-meter drop. Ancient sayings describe that “the first

section of the waterfall is a hundred zhang high, the second

a hundred zhang deep, and the third a hundred zhang wide

(1 zhang equals about 10 feet)”, a visually breathtaking sight

indeed.

Last year, the Baizhangji Waterfall emerged as a soughtafter destination for martial arts-themed activities, seeing

a remarkable 502% increase in tourist numbers and a 568%

rise in ticket revenue. Short videos of the area garnered

over 30 billion views across the internet, and related topics

reached a popularity of over 10 billion. The proportion of

young tourists grew from 40% to 70%, with 80% of them

donning traditional Chinese attire.

This year, the Baizhangji Waterfall has maintained its

popularity. Social media platforms are flooded with videos

of visitors dressed in various traditional Chinese costumes,

from martial arts styles to the attire of the Wei and Jin

Dynasties (220-420 AD). The ancient stone pavilions and

misty cascading waterfalls create a dreamlike backdrop,

making it a perfect setting for capturing stunning visuals of

figures in flowing, immortal-like garments. Capitalizing on

such massive online interest, local authorities have kept up

with the trend, launched live broadcasts, released beautiful

short videos, and hosted multiple ancient-style events.

These include performances transporting visitors to the

Ming Dynasty, the Baizhangji Chivalrous Walk, and the Ming

Dynasty Bazaar. Social Media influencers have also been

invited to promote these events. Ahead of May Day this year,

Wencheng County launched the Baizhangji Martial Artsthemed Event, the flagship product of its “5A + Martial Arts”

Yinxiu Studios: Wenzhou’s First Film and Television

Shooting Base

base in Wenzhou, catering to the growing demand for

micro-short drama productions. The base features a wide

range of themed areas, including Tang and Song Dynasty

teahouses, medical clinics, restaurants, as well as streets

of the Republican style, complete with landmarks like the

Paramount, railway stations, and foreign clothing shops.

Additionally, the facility incorporates modern office settings,

making it a versatile location for various indoor and outdoor

shoots.

Located within the Ouhai International Conference

and Exhibition Center, Yinxiu Studios offers a wide

array of themed sets, including streets of the Tang and

Song dynasties’ style, cultural and tourism blocks of the

Republican aesthetic, modern office environments, and

underground commercial modules. The base boasts liveaction studios with diverse themes, such as schools,

hospitals, courts, high-speed rail stations, cafes, palaces,

the Baihua Joyhouse, and government offices. Furthermore,

it has 150 live broadcasting rooms for promotional and

streaming services. From script development to midshooting, post-production, and distribution, Yinxiu

Studios provides a comprehensive “one-stop” service,

including support for actors’ guilds, access to lighting and

photography equipment, as well as food, accommodation,

and travel arrangements. It specializes in offering a seamless

filming experience, where production teams “come with a

script and leave with a film”.

Yinxiu Studios also opens its doors to the public,

offering sightseeing and various experiential activities

such as VR experiences, themed mazes, role-playing, and

cosplay, coupled with appropriate costumes and props for

an immersive experience. It also includes a short drama

workshop where professionals teach visitors the basics

of film and television production, such as video editing,

dubbing, and special effects. In the future, the base plans

to introduce script-themed restaurants and shops selling

specialty foods, souvenirs, handicrafts, and cultural

creations. Seasonal fashion bazaars, themed markets,

and music fairs will also be held to enhance the visitor

experiences and boost consumer engagement.

Shao Mohan has been engaged in fashion design for

over 20 years, specializing in original designs for both men’s

and women’s suits. She enjoys a high reputation in the

industry and has tailored clothing for renowned entertainers

such as Pu Bajin, Li Yu, Zhu Shimao, Huang Lei, and Feng

Gong. She has also designed clothing for multiple brands’

entire series presentation during the Milan Fashion Week

and other fashion shows. In 2020, driven by her love for

clothing design, Shao founded the Wenzhou Minerve Design

Co., Ltd., and established the parent-child fashion brand

COS&PLAY.

◎ National and Ethnic Styles Lead Neo-Chinese Style

Fashion

As the chief designer of Minerve, Shao exudes a unique

charm with her slim figure, wearing delicately styled ethnic

clothing. The company lobby displays a variety of highend custom-made suits for both men and women, along

with a range of women’s clothing. Each outfit reflects the

designer’s meticulous attention to details.

“This suit’s most distinctive feature is the Chinese

phoenix on the shoulder. In traditional Chinese culture,

the phoenix is considered the ‘king of birds’, symbolizing

auspiciousness, beauty, and prosperity. The creature is

crafted with beading techniques, adding a luxurious and

grand touch. Additionally, this garment employs jacquard

embroidery techniques; and the sleeves, which are

pieced together with coarse cloth from Yunnan, featuring

handmade embroidery by local artisans, showcase strong

ethnic characteristics...” Shao introduced each piece of

clothing with great enthusiasm, revealing her deep love for

traditional Chinese culture. She has always been fond of

ethnic and national styles, collecting related materials, and

participating in domestic brand presentation events focused

on Neo-Chinese fashion. She frequently visits Yunnan to

gather ethnically characteristic handmade embroidered

fabrics, integrating them into her designs.

Shao believes that incorporating Chinese elements

highlights the brand’s cutting-edge, individualistic,

fashionable, and grand style. Every piece of her clothing

contains Chinese elements that she selects through

reading and research, such as tassels, Chinese knots, frog

buttons, jacquard, embroidery, and landscape painting. She

keeps learning Chinese culture, and artfully interweaves

traditional motifs into modern practical clothing, which

appears not only elegant and refined but also simple and

comfortable for daily wear, forming a special Neo-Chinese

style.Besides, her use of custom fabrics and meticulous

craftsmanship further emphasizes the modern and

fashionable Chinese aesthetic.

Clothing has the capacity to carry cultural significance,

Shao thinks. Infused with love of national culture, it radiates

a fashion glow unique to China, and showcases the power of

Chinese beauty to the world.

◎ Innovation via Integration of Chinese and Western

Styles

Over the past few years, Shao has focused primarily

on suit design, research and development, providing highend women’s suits for crossover fashion events. She has

served as the vice-chairman of the Wenzhou division of

the Mrs. Globe Pageant and is a co-founder of the Beautiful

Life. Her design style has been recognized by industry

insiders, leading to increasing external collaborations and

sales in cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Guangzhou,

Hangzhou, Fuzhou, and Xi’an. She also often customizes

work uniforms for clients. Her consistent innovation to

adapt to changing times and current trends reflects her

passion and dedication to the industry.

Shao emphasizes the importance of the collision

between eastern and western cultures in design. Creators

can spark unrestricted creativity by blending Chinese and

western elements through incorporating western inlay

techniques and craftsmanship.

“Culture is the soul of design, and design is an

expression of culture. The true value of design lies in

the culture it represents. A good and successful design is

never baseless. It must be nurtured by excellent traditional

national culture and developed through integrated

innovation.” Shao resonates deeply with this statement by

Chen Dapeng, president of the China National Garment

Association. She believes that “Chinese fashion” should not

be confined to a fixed paradigm but embrace an inclusive

aesthetic attitude. She plans to incorporate the Chinese

stand collar in her upcoming design of men’s wear,

using frog buttons, round buttons, and diagonal fronts as

decorations to provide a refreshing simplicity. The choice of

materials will be more varied and simpler, including satin,

cotton, and linen.

Chen Yiyu’s clients are more familiar with her online

name, Xidawang (lit. “great hope” in Chinese), derived from

her chosen English name, which also inspired the name of

her studio, Hōóǒòpe. When asked about its meaning, the

petite and beautiful designer used hand gestures to explain,

“I always feel that intonation is like everyone’s life, full

of ups and downs, representing the process of growth and

perception.”

In the five years since its inception, the Hōóǒòpe studio

has garnered a loyal customer base and become a high-end

children’s stage costume brand recommended by many

moms.

◎ Promoting National Culture and Integrating Fashion

Aesthetics

“I prefer to showcase our national culture in a modern

way or through exaggerated styles,” said Chen, who began

designing Chinese-style clothing at the start of her business.

“It wasn’t as accepted by the market back then as it is

now,” she added while displaying a few distinctive ethnic

costumes, including a dance costume inspired by Wenzhou

rice dough figurines, a traditional qipao dress featuring tiedye techniques, and a small suit combined with ink wash

painting, and shared the stories behind these creations.

“This qipao was designed for my daughter for a fashion

runway competition. At that time, I was fascinated by

the ancient craft of tie-dye, and all the white clothes at

home became my raw materials,” Chen recalled with a

smile. European-style dresses such as puff skirts were the

mainstream fashion back then. However, the qipao she

designed for her daughter stood out among the Europeanstyle outfits and surprisingly won second place. “‘You won

because of this outfit,’ one of the judges told me after the

competition,” she reminisced.

The ICH crafts like tie-dye, frog buttons, and auspicious

cloud patterns can showcase the profound Chinese culture.

Chen hopes to combine traditional arts with the needs of the

new generation in her creations, and displays them under

the spotlight.

Rather than standing in front of people to explain her

design concepts, this children’s stage costume designer

excels at presenting them through her skillful hands, and

finally turning them into perfect pieces.

Drawing design sketches, piecing together fabrics,

constructing prototypes, and decorating details, she often

spends whole days in her studio, working tirelessly to

bring her ideas to life. These bold, imaginative, and unique

designs are deeply loved by children.

◎ Passion for Life and Inspiration from Travel

Designers need to find inspiration by “leaving home,”

and for Chen, this means experiencing the landscapes and

cultures of various places, as well as indulging in her wide

range of interests. Encountering new things satisfies her

curiosity and enriches her understanding of the world and

aesthetics.

“I’ve traveled in Xizang, Yunnan, and other places,

learning about the local customs and gaining a deeper

understanding of ethnic cultures, which helps me discern

and judge the pieced-together elements of national style

found online.” Many of her creative ideas come from the

experiences accumulated during her travels, such as the

direct impression of local ethnic costumes, understanding

of architectural styles, and immersive experiences of local

customs.

Besides traveling, Chen also has a wide range of

hobbies. “I love trying new things.” From piano to guitar,

calligraphy to martial arts, baking to handicrafts, she

maintains a love for life and a passion for art. “Life is

exciting because challenges are everywhere. I believe these

skills might come in handy someday, and they are also the

motivation and source of my creativity.” She strives to “stay

hungry, stay foolish”, holding herself to high standards.

Looking to the future, Xidawang hopes to continue

learning and expanding her skills to improve her expertise

in stage costume design, aiming to set the standard for

custom children’s stage costumes in China and make more

children on stage to shine brightly.

Clothing is closely linked to culture. In Ye Xi's

view, designers, inspired by traditional culture,

should incorporate it into their meaningful design

to endow their works with unique value. In recent

years, the fashion industry has seen a surge in

“China Chic”, where clothing that combines

traditional Chinese culture with fashion elements

has become popular among young people, who

has begun to establish a sense of national identity

and cultural awareness. She believes it is an

encouraging beginning.

◎ Culture Nourishes, Creativity Shines

During her study in France, Ye Xi discovered

that the international fashion circle is keen on

finding design inspiration from traditional Chinese

culture. Designers not only skillfully incorporate

elements of Xiqu (traditional Chinese theatre) into

their creations but also deeply explore the essence

of traditional Chinese craftsmanship. Seeing

Chinese elements everywhere on the runways, Ye

Xi couldn't help pondering,“What can I do?” She

turned her attention to her hometown's Nanxi (the

earliest form of Xiqu). She said,“I hope to extend

the IP of Xiqu into fashion creations.” As a unique

cultural treasure and IP, Xiqu art carries strong

national symbolic characteristics.

We n z h ou ’s repu t a t i o n a s t h e“B i r t hpla c e o f

Nanxi”and the“Hometown of Over a Hundred Folk Arts

and Crafts”vividly portrays its rich cultural heritage and

unique charm. Ye Xi fondly remembers her childhood,

watching operas from the attic on Drum Tower Street in

the old downtown, and being mesmerized by the splendid

costumes and intricate designs. She recalls a neighbor,

an elderly woman, who could embroider lifelike dragon

and phoenix patterns on opera robes using only gold and

silver threads, seemingly bringing these costumes to life.

All these left a lasting impression on her. In 2013, she

opened a high-end custom-made clothing workshop in

downtown Wenzhou, infusing the essence of Wenzhou

Nanxi culture into the design of dresses, formal wear,

and stage costumes, showcasing an art style that is both

classical and fashionable. Later, she established her own

clothing brand, Oufu. She said,“Since returning from

abroad, I have increasingly realized that what is national is

also global. Rather than blindly following foreign trends,

it's better to start with the local cultural characteristics of

my hometown and create a unique ‘Wenzhou Trend'.”

Among Ye Xi's numerous works, “Youyuan Feimeng” (lit.

Garden No Dream) is the most representative of modern

clothing designed with opera elements. The essence of

this outfit lies in its uniquely crafted detachable collar

design, which innovatively combines the classical style

of the Ou embroidery, the three-dimensional beauty of

French embroidery, and the modern digital printing. Its

detachable collar can be easily paired with various outfits.

This garment can be accessorized differently according to

different occasions, offering multifunctional use, suitable

for contemporary people to frequent various settings.

In addition to traditional Chinese theatre culture, the

unique ICH crafts of Wenzhou, such as Ou embroidery,

Ou embossing, Indigo sandwiched dyeing, and finepattern paper cutting, as well as the beautiful landscapes,

have all become sources of inspiration for Ye Xi's designs.

She repeatedly emphasizes that to excel in “China Chic”

design, one cannot simply stack various elements together.

Instead, one must absorb nutrients from the rich culture

and internalize them to develop a distinct design style of

her own.

◎ China Chic Leads the Way and Steals the Show

Young people always lead the trend of fashion. They

proclaim, “The ultimate fashion is China Chic.” As an

associate professor and supervisor of postgraduates at

Wenzhou University School of Art and Design, Ye Xi has

truly felt the young generation's love and attention for

China Chic in their works. They have become not only

inheritors of traditional culture but also innovators. They

regard traditional culture as a new benchmark for fashion,

endowing it with unique fashionable charm. Recalling this

year's graduation design exhibition, she said, “The two

major themes of China Chic and environmental protection

complemented each other perfectly. The students fused

traditional elements with modern aesthetics, creating

numerous refreshing and innovative works.”

Ye Xi aspires to propel more Chinese cultural elements

onto the international stage. Always attentive to global

fashion trends, she has noticed that China Chic-inspired

clothing is not only highly sought after domestically but also

gradually gaining recognition on the world stage. She said, “At

the recent Cannes Film Festival, many Chinese influencers

appeared in attire with the elements of China Chic,

successfully capturing the attention of the international

fashion community. This not only showcases the unique

charm of China Chic-inspired clothing but also enhances the

influence of Chinese culture on the global stage.”

As the wave of China Chic rises in the East, Ye Xi

believes that local characteristics are key to distinguishing

Wenzhou's fashion industry. She looks forward to the

industry delving deeper into and utilizing local culture as

a breakthrough, showcasing the unique allure of Wenzhou

fashion. The fusion of regional characteristics and cultural

heritage will become a new driving force for Wenzhou's

fashion industry, leading it toward a brighter future.

By Zhuge Fangfang, Editor of China Media Group Mobile and Wenzhou News

PERSONAL PROFILE

Huang Hong, professor and doctoral supervisor at the

French Department of Nanjing University; deputy director of

the Contemporary Foreign Literature and Culture Research

Center at Nanjing University; Yunshan Chair Professor at

Guangdong University of Foreign Studies; As a translator

and writer, she has published books of The Passage, Reading

and Translating in Idle Moments and Marguerite Duras: The

Darkroom of Writing, and has translated more than 50 works

including The Little Prince, The Human Earth(Terre des

hommes), and The Prim of Life(La Force de l'âge).

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the diplomatic

relations between China and France. June 29 is the birthday

of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, the French pilot and author

of The Little Prince, and has been designated as “The Little

Prince Day”. On that day, the “Classic Derivatives and Crossborder Communication: The Little Prince Forum” was

successfully concluded at Nanjing University. Huang Hong

presided over the forum's opening ceremony. Having been

deeply involved in French literature for over 30 years, Huang

Hong is a prolific and active translator, writer, and activist

who has translated works by many prominent French

writers. She frequently participates in academic seminars,

cultural exchange activities, and reading sessions both in

China and abroad.

Engaging in Cross-Border Communication of The Little

Communication: The Little Prince Forum” is China’s first

interdisciplinary, cross-cultural, and multi-integrated forum

focusing on The Little Prince. Written by the French pilot

and writer Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, The Little Prince

has been widely acclaimed since its publication in 1943,

becoming the most read and translated French literary work

in the world. It has sold over 200 million copies globally,

with more than 7,000 different versions, over 1,000 of which

are in Chinese.

Huang Hong’s translation of The Little Prince has

been well received by domestic publishers and readers.

In her view, no matter how the times change, The Little

Prince remains an inexhaustible spiritual well. Discussing

the classicization, creative derivation, and cross-border

communication of The Little Prince is very meaningful.

“The desert is beautiful because somewhere it hides a well.

The Little Prince is ageless. It transcends time, becoming a

super IP that evokes love and responsibility, resonates with

humanities and arts, and promotes cultural integration and

sharing among countries.”

In addition to translation, Huang Hong actively

participates in the cross-border dissemination of The

Little Prince . This classic has been given a new life and

vitality through such dissemination. On March 5 this year,

the Child’s Word World: Protecting the Planet and The

Little Prince Jiangsu Tour Exhibition Nanjing Station was

launched, for which Huang Hong served as academic

director, participated in the planning, and wrote the

exhibition preface. Over two and a half months, it attracted

thousands of visitors, topping the Nanjing Exhibition Hall

Best-Seller List and Nanjing Cultural and Art Hot List on

ticketing platforms, fostering close exchanges between

Chinese and French people.

Translations

At the end of February this year, to commemorate

the 150th anniversary of the birth and 70th anniversary

of the death of French writer Colette, a new version of

Flower Affairs translated by Huang Hong and published

by Baihuazhou Literature and Art Publishing House was

released.

“How come I translated Flower Affairs ? It’s all because

of Wu Yaling, editor of ‘Six Points’, who was my classmate

when I studied at the University of Paris, III. She thought

this book was particularly suitable for me and asked me to

translate it, for I loved flowers and plants. At that time, I had

just completed my doctoral thesis. I couldn’t put the book

down when I got it, so I immediately agreed to translate

it and finished it very quickly.” Huang Hong said. While

translating Flower Affairs , she often thought of many stories

related to plants, former friends, and traces and memories

of past life.

The book Flower Affairs contains 22 articles. Because

the publisher thought the book was too short for a

standalone publication, Huang Hong selected two plantrelated articles by Colette, Grape Tendrils and Cedo, and

chose all the words related to flowers and plants in her diary

from 1989 to the completion of the translation of Flower

Affairs , compiling them into Words of Flowers attached to

the book. Cheng Yue, the editor of the fifth edition of Flower

Affairs , believes that Huang Hong’s own writings and those

of the French female writer complement each other, adding

interaction and fun. “In addition to Colette’s prose, I also

like Huang Hong’s heartfelt Words of Flowers which records

her many years’ memories of flowers and fragments of her

life in the countryside of Yueqing County,” said Jia Jing, the

illustrator of Flower Affairs .

Huang Hong has loved growing flowers and plants

since childhood. Known as “Green Hands” among her

friends, many of her former students affectionately call her

“Flower Fairy” in postcards. Her love for flowers and plants

stems from childhood experiences. Born in Zhongxiangtian

Village, Beibaixiang Town, Yueqing County, she spent her

childhood at her grandparents’ house, enjoying the sea

breeze and catching crabs. Huang Hong’s name is related to

her parents’ study of traditional Chinese medicine and their

knowledge of botany. “Hong” is a plant. The Compendium

of Materia Medica records: “This Polygonum is very large,

and its flowers are also dense and red, so it is called ‘Hong’,

which means ‘big’ or ‘great’” She smiled and said that

perhaps it was fate that names were the marks imprinted on

everyone.

Entering Huang Hong’s home in Heyuan at Nanjing

University Xianlin Campus, you’ll find the living room,

dining room, and bedroom filled with carefully arranged

bookshelves and adorned with fresh and dried flowers.

Although the balcony and terrace are not large, they are

planted with more than 50 kinds of plants, including wood

fragrances, windmill jasmines, irises, osmanthus, blue snow

flowers, lemons, endless summers, rosemaries, gardenia,

and roses. The beautiful scenery here year-round makes

neighbors, friends, and students envious.

Being a Translator Who Lives Life to The Fullest

Huang Hong is warm, cheerful, and loves country life.

She likes to take care of flowers and plants. Her terrace

is a small universe that provides her infinite energy. This

hardworking gardener who reads, translates, and teaches

is called “a translator who lives life to the fullest” by her

friends.

“Reading and translating in my spare time” is Huang

Hong’s attitude towards translation. In this fast-paced era,

reading, translating, and studying require one to calm down

and spend “free time” to do them slowly. Today, literary

translation is a thankless and lonely job for translators.

Without interest, it is impossible to sustain it.

“If the translation of foreign literature cannot continue,

if there are no high-quality contemporary foreign literary

works to supplement the vision of the Chinese intellectual

community, where will foreign literature research go? What

should the Chinese department do in foreign literature

research?” Huang Hong is straightforward. She likes to

write down her translation experiences and calls them the

secondary text of the translated works. “Translation not

 45

only allows me to understand the outside world but also

to understand myself.” Her essay collections The Passage,

Reading and Translating in Idle Moments and Turning

Around and Meeting are all derivatives of her translation.

“Reading is like breathing, while translation is like a

fish drinking water, knowing whether it is hot or cold. I

‘drink’ other people’s words, and then those words have

my temperature.” Huang Hong also has many friends who

love flowers and plants, and they often give each other

flowers and plants and exchange news about their own

flowers. “There is a chicory plant on the terrace given by a

friend from East China Normal University. It appeared as

an evening dress when blooming. I was worried it would

not survive the winter, but the friend’s ‘evening dress’

disappeared the next year, while mine grew into several

pots.” Huang Hong said that this was just like translation,

which was to transplant text into a new cultural context, so

that a book could be revitalized in new soil.

“The most beautiful flowers are the ones you plant

yourself,” Huang Hong remarked. I totally agree. She invests

time in her flowers and plants, she gradually shapes them

into her ideal appearance, and she reaps her own fruits

through her “labor” day after day.
