to overcome this problem, but I still have not improved much. Maybe, I tend to overanalyse things.

M: I do not think that is your problem. ⑦It is probably a case of anxiety. Take it easy. Things get worse

when you do not have control of yourself.

W: I know, I know. However, I cannot help it. ⑥I need to have a clear mind when we start on chapter

three. Let’s listen to some light music for a while.

M: OK, Mary.

W: 11Do you know Nat King Cole?

M: Yeah. What about him?

W: 11 In his song Smile, he tells people to smile through heartbreak. But now, research suggests that pretending to be happy may just

make things worse.

M: Really? Tell me more about it.

W: 12Researchers took pictures of bus drivers and then looked into the expressions on their faces.

M: They did? What happened then?

W: After following the drivers closely, 13 researchers found that the drivers had to force a smile at work. They felt so bad that they

wanted to give up their jobs.

M: I never imagined it could be so serious. Why is that?

W: 13The report says when people try to hold back bad feelings, it turns out that the feelings become even stronger and last longer.

(Text 9)

M: Have you decided how much you’re going to ask for a fl at, madam?

W: Not yet. 14Oh, I’m totally at a loss where to start.

M: Well, you need to consider several aspects, like the size, location, condition, um, how big is your fl at?

W: Two bedrooms.

M: That’s not very big. Is it downtown?

W: Yes. 15 It’s just a block away from the fi tness centre.

M: 15Well, that certainly adds to its value. Is it in good shape?

W: It was built in the 1990s, but it is in good condition.

M: You also need to consider the prices of other fl ats in the neighbourhood.

W: Sure, sure!

M: Can you decide on the off er price now?

W: Um, probably not. 16 I’d better talk with my husband fi rst. Thanks for the information though. I’ll contact you when we have decided.

(Text 10)

M: Jim Carrey was born in Canada in 1962. He believes that his sense of humour developed during his teenage years. This was his

way of dealing with a diffi cult period in his life. His father had just lost his job and Carrey Junior had to earn money and study

at the same time. 17Carrey fi rst performed live when he was 15, at Yuk Yuks, a famous club in Toronto. Even though he failed to

make his audience laugh on this occasion, he kept working on his material and within four years became the club’s top comedy

star. He later moved to Los Angeles to tour the clubs there. 18From 1990, he starred regularly in an American TV show. The

character he played was Fire Marshall Bill, who always went up in smoke. 19Sadly, this character had to be dropped because

people thought that his fi re act might have a bad infl uence on children.

20Carrey’s fi rst important fi lm was Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, one of his most popular fi lms. Other fi lms since then have included

The Mask, Batman Forever and Yes Man. His earnings are at around $20 million per fi lm.

W: I’d be happy to help, but I can’t do it today. I have a meeting with a potential customer this afternoon.

way, you can walk across the Golden Jubilee Bridge and it’s a short walk from there.

W: 12OK. Thanks. That’s the South Bank, isn’t it?

M: That’s right. There’s lots to do there.

W: And 13 I think the London Dungeon is on the South Bank?

M: 13Yes, it costs £22.95.

M: There’s lots to see and do on the South Bank. That’s free, though. There are markets and street performances, and there’s always

a really nice atmosphere.

(Text 9)

M: Do you enjoy watching comedies? Then why not come and see what’s happening at Comedy Hour?

17Comedy Hour owns comedy clubs in several countries that are run just for people aged 13–18. They’re just as familiar

with working in adult comedy clubs as they are working with children.

The Comedy Hour company was set up by John Winterson. 18 In fact, his act quickly became so popular that he soon found

lots of other comedians who wanted to join his company.

If you’re having a party at home, Comedy Hour can come and perform and amuse you. 19Your very own comedian will also

help you to tell your guests some jokes and silly stories and they can join in too, if they want.

Here at Comedy Hour, it’s not just about the adults telling the jokes. We also offer young people the chance to perform. But

we’ve yet to find someone who can do that without preparation, so 20we’ve set up the world’s first Comedy Classes to teach

young people how to tell jokes on stage. At the moment our classes are only monthly, but we’re planning to start a number

of others over the coming year.

W: I just talked to Chuck. He’s always in a bad mood. Talking to him is really difficult. It’s easy to say something that really

upsets him.

M: I think it’s because he isn’t doing well at school this year.

(Text 3)

W: Well, it looks as though you have been overdoing it. But not very serious. Just a pulled muscle. Have you been doing any

intense exercise?

M: Well, I do quite a bit of weightlifting.

W: Ah, well. I would try to ease up a bit if I were you.

(Text 4)

M: I have a severe stomach ache.

W: Go and consult a doctor. I hope it’s nothing serious.

M: I hope not. I’ll phone my boss to ask for leave from work and go for a check-up right away.

(Text 5)

W: What kind of food do you serve?

M: Mostly Asian food: Chinese, Japanese, Thai … We have great sushi and sashimi. Do you like raw fish?

W: Yeah. I like everything!

M: Great! I recommend the sushi appetiser. It’s raw fish with rice.

(Text 6)

M: Julie, ⑥I just got a phone call from Ms Woods in Accounting. She asked me if your expense report is ready.

copies by the end of the day.

(Text 7)

M: Good afternoon, Tina. ⑧I saw your post about starting a biking club here in the company. I was wondering, could people

who don’t work here join too?

W: I suppose so. Anyone would be welcome to join our biking trips.

M: Well, I don’t even have a bike, but ⑨do you remember Mary Pierce? She used to work with me in sales. Anyway, she’s a real

biking enthusiast. She even cycled across Europe.

W: Wow, that’s impressive. She should definitely join us then. ⑩We have our company’s end-of-quarter party tonight at 6:30, but I

can give her a call afterwards. Then I’ll let her know more about the club.

(Text 8)

M: I see that you are very interested in learning about the legal system.

W: Yes, very much. I find it attractive. 11However, not enough to change my major from psychology to law yet.

M: Maybe you should follow John Grisham’s example. He is a lawyer, and he writes novels about the legal system. 12You can finish

your studies in psychology, and then write novels based on your expertise in psychology.

W: That is a good idea. However, do you think I am creative enough to be able to create all sorts of stories like John Grisham? That

would require a lot of talent, and I do not know whether I have it in me.

M: 13You never know unless you try. Anyway, people say, “Where there is a will, there is a way.” right?

(Text 9)

M: When did you decide you were going to teach yoga professionally?

W: About three years ago. I was a school teacher at the time but I decided to go on a part-time contract with my school and run yoga

classes in my spare time at a local sports centre. Then I was offered the chance to rent a room in a leisure centre, so 14 I gave up

the teaching job to do yoga full time.

M: What’s the most rewarding part of your work?

W: Well, I always enjoyed being a teacher and 15 I get the same satisfaction from being a yoga instructor. I like helping people to

discover what interests them. I love seeing people transform from people in physical or emotional pain into positive, healthy

individuals. 16Some become passionate about yoga. I find that particularly satisfying. It can help people relieve tension, and

lots of customers say their memory and concentration have improved since they’ve started. And they all feel energised.

(Text 10)

M: Jennifer, what do your classmates at school think about you being a comedian?

W: A lot of them are creative, but 17 because nobody else does comedy, they’re pleased to have someone they know who’s got those skills.

M: What do you find most difficult when you’re on stage?

W: The hardest thing for any comedian is when an audience doesn’t find you funny. Once, I couldn’t remember which joke came

next, so there was a long embarrassing silence. 18Someone said “Hurry up!” really loudly, which made me think of a funny reply

that made everyone laugh.

M: Who has helped you develop as a comedian most?

W: My teachers have been fantastic in encouraging me. As they’re not comedians, though, it’s hard for them to help me improve.

19Seeing how the audience reacts tells me directly whether my material’s working or not, which has pushed me to do better

more than anything else.

M: Do you want a career in comedy in the future?

W: When I was younger, I used to dream of being a doctor — I liked the idea of helping people. Obviously comedy helps people — it’s

good for us to laugh — but I think it would stop being fun if it was my job. 20 I enjoy the shows too much to give them up totally, but I’d

rather do something else.

W: ⑧Talent Nation was good again last night.

M: ⑧It was. There was the usual range of acts — some were fantastic and others were awful.

W: That’s what makes the show so interesting, though. The terrible ones are just as enjoyable as the good ones.

M: Exactly, which can hardly be said about the judges. What they say is supposed to be a really amusing part of the show.

W: I know. But most of it is really boring. You and I could do a better job.

M: True, ⑨but at least the presenters give some interesting opinions about the performers.

M: Hi Alice, I need to do volunteer work at the hospital this Sunday.

W: Sounds interesting. What type of skills would you need?

M: As far as skills are concerned, I don’t think you really need any, ⑩as long as you are willing to help.

W: But don’t you need medical skills to volunteer at a hospital?

M: No. The volunteers at the hospital do not actually provide medical service. We do simple tasks such as bringing meals to the patients’ rooms,

11 helping the hospital staff move a patient from one room to another room, or walking a patient out when he or she is being discharged.

(Text 9)

M: 13This evening on Young and Gifted I am joined in the studio by Julia Emerson, the young Scottish writer who’s recently had a

screenplay accepted by a major Hollywood studio. Could I start by asking you to explain exactly why what you’ve done is so unusual?

W: Well, Hollywood films these days don’t start off with a screenplay. 14The screenplay only gets written

after the producers have come up with an idea for a film. Then they contact agents to find at least

one major star who will act in it. The next step is to get a team of anything up to 20 screenwriters

working on the screenplay. 15Now, I was inexperienced enough to think that I could simply write a

screenplay and send it to a number of studios, which is what I did. When I didn’t get an answer, I

wrote another one. And this time, by some amazing chance, they accepted it!

M: You really have a genius for writing. 16 I think everyone has been astonished by the fact that you’ve

been successful with a screenplay at such an early age. When am I going to see the film?

W: I’ve got no idea.

M: I hope it’s soon. Julia, thanks for talking to us.

(Text 10)

W: 17 18A British comedian has announced his intention to perform on tour around the world, and

not just in English. This popular show will be performed in 28 countries. The comedian intends

to perform in several different languages during the tour. He is by no means fluent in all of these

languages, 18 although he has already performed shows in French and German. He said, “It’s a very

positive thing to do.” He thought that London was a great place for comedy, but he also wanted to

communicate in other countries. 19He felt that people who speak English are just lazy when it comes

to learning foreign languages. Although there were lots of reasons for other people to learn English, he suggested that for English

speakers to learn a foreign language, they had to make it into an adventure. 20He felt it was important to translate his shows

because local languages helped to get his jokes through to the audience. He said that laughter is the best way to tell if you are

getting the translation right.

W: Did you enjoy your swim this morning?

M: ⑥Yeah, it was great. I feel really refreshed now. Hey, have you been to the new swimming pool?

W: Yes, I went with Celia last Saturday afternoon. ⑦It was really busy, though. We could hardly find room to swim!

M: Oh, it was lovely and quiet this morning. Next time, you should go early in the day — there was hardly anybody else there first

thing this morning. The water was icy, though! I nearly screamed when I jumped in! I had to swim really fast to warm up.

W: Oh dear! That’s certainly one way to make people get fit!

W: Unfortunately, ⑨I don’t think we can start it until 2 April. The problem is that none of our advertisements will appear on the

Internet until that date.

(Text 8)

W: Now, Matt, what are you interested in doing after you obtain your master’s degree?

M: I’m interested in the media, especially television.

W: Are you interested in acting?

M: No, I’m more interested in doing something connected with current affairs and news. 11 I see myself more as somebody who

works behind the scenes, like a producer.

W: 12What would you say your personal strengths are? Are you good at organising and working on a team, for example?

M: Yes, I’d say so. 12 I’ve been the captain of the basketball team for the last three years, and I’ve recently helped to produce a short

play at school. And I was awarded a scholarship.

W: And besides playing sports and doing dramas?

M: 13 I help to edit the school magazine, and I write articles for the school website.

M: Don’t be silly.

W: Did he wear red hair at your party? Huh? He must have looked great.

M: It was green actually — and 15 he looked stupid.

W: Hey, is 16 your dad doing anything next Saturday?

M: I don’t know. He might be, why?

W: Well, 16 can you do me a favour? My brother is having a birthday party …

M: Don’t!

W: … and he wants to create a funny atmosphere.

M: You can’t be serious. He just does it for fun.

M: 17OK, I’ll ask tonight. But I’m not sure whether he will agree or not.

(Text 10)

M: Hello, everyone. My topic today is about the power of a smile. There are a number of sayings about the power of a smile —

All good advice, but it may not be as simple as that. 18According to new research, if you want to make a good impression when

you meet people, it’s not just that you smile; it’s how you smile. The study was carried out by the GO Group, a business support

organisation in Scotland, in the UK. They looked at people’s responses to different smiles. They found that the responses differ

greatly. Through this study, they say people should avoid three types of smiles. The first is the “Top Fan” — very wide, all teeth

showing that you can have too much of a good thing. 19Then there is the “Big Freeze” — a fixed smile that looks practised

and insincere. Finally comes “The Robot” — a small, thin smile lacking in warmth. The group also warns against smiling too

quickly, saying it can make you look false. 20The best smile, they say, is slower … and flows naturally across the whole face.

W: That sounds like a really good idea, doesn’t it?

M: Mmm. 12The idea was put forward by the Victoria Transport Accident Office. It soon won over 45 people in Speed. They even

W: No, I’m fine. 14 It was a good meal. Rather expensive though.

M: 14More than rather! I thought they charged far too much for what we got.

W: But if you want to eat out elsewhere, you have to be prepared to pay much more. It’s not just the food you’re paying for. You pay

for the service, the music. It’s all those things that make it such an enjoyable evening.

M: 13But I think it’d be better to buy something really special and eat it in the comfort of our own home.

W: 13Oh yes! And who does the cooking?

M: 13 I’m always ready to help.

W: That’s not the point. 15 I want to be able to enjoy a relaxing evening and that means eating out and ...

M: And wasting money. Just think what we could have bought if we’d stayed at home.

W: But it’s not as much fun! I loved the music.

M: Well, 16 I found it embarrassing. I hated it when the violinist stood right beside me. I didn’t know where to look.

(Text 10)

M: A few years ago my wife and I were living in New York. Our apartment was next to Central Park, and every morning I went for

a run before I went to work.

17A lot of people had told me to be careful of thieves in the park, so I didn’t usually take anything with me. But one morning my

wife asked me to buy some bread on the way home, so I put $10 in my back pocket.

While I was running through the park, a middle-aged man knocked into me. He said sorry and continued running. 18 I thought it was

a bit strange, so I checked my pocket and found that the money was missing. I immediately ran after the man and took him by the

arm. I started shouting and demanding that he give me the $10. I’m not usually a hot-headed person but I was really angry. 19This

frightened him and he quickly put his hand in his pocket and gave me the money. Then he ran away as fast as he could.

I bought the bread and went home. As soon as I got there, I began to tell my wife my story. “You won’t believe what happened to

me!” I started. She immediately interrupted, “I know, you left the money for the bread on the kitchen table.”

situations. His humour is always made clear through a series of simple and funny acts that rely purely on body language that

is shocked to discover it is actually raw hamburger and tastes awful. He busies himself hiding the raw meat anywhere he can

reach. He even hides some inside the purse of a woman sitting near him.

Rowan Atkinson is an English actor, comedian and screenwriter. We know him best as Mr Bean and you may think Rowan

Atkinson is anything like Mr Bean. On the contrary, he is nothing like Mr Bean. At Oxford, he obtained his master’s

degree in electrical engineering. Since he had a stutter at the young age, he began to speak very carefully to make his speech

clearer. Though he had already shown a talent for acting at primary school, he decided to become an actor later at university.

One BBC Television producer said that Rowan would be more famous than Charlie Chaplin.
