M: I saw a ground floor apartment with four bedrooms today.
W: Four bedrooms? It sounds huge.
M: Yeah, it was. But it was quite cheap. And it was a nice place. A big living room with big windows. And the furniture was modern.
W: Sounds great. Did you take it?
M: Well, no. The place was shared. Three boys are looking for a fourth roommate. They seemed nice enough, 11but the place was a
mess. It’s a shame because the place is not bad, quite close to school.
W: Don’t worry. 12Try to see more places tomorrow. Hopefully one of them will be alright. Or ask your classmates for more
information.

W: 13Daniel Ash, your new book is a collection of articles about people with strange jobs.
M: 13Yes, I collected stories about unusual jobs from all over the world.
W: So you’re not talking about actors or shopping assistants.
M: No, all the people in the book have very strange jobs.
W: 14 I see, the book is structured based on different occupational fields. What about in the food industry?
M: Well, when a company wants to advertise food they sometimes need a food stylist. 15Their job is to enhance the visual appeal
of food in advertisements.
W: I’ve never heard of that job before.
M: Well, there are only about 20 food stylists in Britain. For example, when we look at a picture of strawberries and cream we’re
really looking at strawberries and white paint.
W: Really?
M: Yes, and they paint sausages with washing-up liquid, then coffee, to make them look natural.
W: 16Then the cleaning industry. Isn’t cleaning a normal job?
M: 16Normally, yes. But did you know there is a man in America called Brad Fields and …

W: In this age of consumerism, we unnecessarily throw away millions of tons of clothes every year. A lot of these items are as good
as new. Some may be a little worn or miss a button or two. 17France has come up with a new plan to encourage people to
increase the longevity of their clothes. The government will pay a “repair bonus” to people who get their clothes and shoes
repaired at special workshops. The bonus allows individuals to claim back up to $27 of the cost of their repair bills. The plan will
be run by an eco-organization called Refashion. 18The government said the goal of its new program is “to support those who
carry out repairs”.
19An estimated 700,000 tons of clothing are thrown away in France every year. Around two-thirds of this ends up in
landfills. Furthermore, 20 the global fashion industry accounts for between 8–10 percent of global carbon releases every year.
The emergence of fast fashion has worsened this. Fast fashion is the practice of purchasing cheap clothes to wear just a few
times. It uses a lot of artificial materials and chemicals, which harm the environment. The Refashion group also aims to encourage
people to reduce the amount of clothing they buy, and to donate unwanted clothes and footwear to charity. It says over half of
donations can be reused, and a third can be recycled into something new.

M: Have you decided what to order? You normally have salad for lunch, don’t you?
W: Yes. I was thinking I might have the tomato soup, or maybe a cheese sandwich.
