西漢 白玉雕螭鳳紋韘形佩

Although purely ornamental, pendants like the present lot, which

derived from archer's thumb rings, was still known as jue (the old

term for the archer's ring during the Zhou dynasty) in the Han period.

For further discussion, see James C. Y. Watt, Chinese Jades from

Han to Ch'ing, New York, 1980, p.180.

The pointed end and the central circular aperture were followed after

the style in the preceding periods, and more decorative features were

added to the oval pendant during the Han dynasty. See a similar

遼/宋 黃玉熊

The style of the present lot probably inspired by the jade carvings

during the Han dynasty. See a Western Han example with similar

depiction on the face and details on the fur, illustrated by Gu Fang

in The Pictorial Handbook of Ancient Chinese Jades, Beijing, 2007,

p.271.

Bears often linked with eagles and carved as a yingxiong group, as

the eagle (ying) and the bear (xiong) together refer to a pun of 'hero'.

See a jade carving of yingxiong, Song to Yuan, illustrated in Chinese

Jade Animals, Hong Kong, 1996, pp.140-141, no.119. The carving

style of the bear's face is comparable to the present lot.

明 灰白玉雕臥馬擺件

The present lot is notable for the skilful depiction of a horse in an

unusual playful pose, possibly reclining or rolling. For more examples

in similar style, see two jade horses dated to the Tang dynasty,

illustrated in Chinese Jade Animal, Hong Kong, 1996, pls.64-65. See

also a related example, Song dynasty, in the Palace Museum, Beijing,

illustrated in Compendium of Collections in the Palace Museum:

The horse depicted with the head facing the hindquarters and the

limbs tucked under the body, which resembles the present lot. This

particular way of modelling as shown in the present lot is probably

an imitation of style and a continuation of the craftsmanship from the

preceding dynasties.

It is also suggested that this type of jade carvings was often used

as paperweight for the literati, see a jade horse carved in recumbent

position, Jin or Yuan or later, illustrated by Jessica Rawson in

Ewers, such as the present example, appear to be

inspired by Central Asian and Middle Eastern metal

vessels. This shape is often seen in porcelain; see for

example a blue and white ewer, Yongle,, illustrated in The

Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum:

Blue and White Porcelain with Underglaze Red, vol.1,

Hong Kong, 2000, p.43, no.41. Compare with several

jade ewers and covers, Ming dynasty, in the Qing Court

Collection, illustrated in Compendium of Collections in

the Palace Museum, Jade (7), Beijing, 2011, nos.81, 85,

90.

The intricate design of C and S scrolls adorning the

present jade vase is also deeply rooted in China's

rich artistic heritage, specifically drawing inspiration

from archaic motifs found on bronzes. These scrolls,

characterised by their sinuous and interlocking

patterns, evoke a sense of fluidity and harmony that

has been revered in Chinese aesthetics for centuries.

The incorporation of these motifs reflects a broader

fascination with archaism prevalent in Chinese art and

culture, where artists and connoisseurs alike sought to

connect with and pay homage to the ancient past. By

emulating designs from antiquity, this jade vase not only

showcases the technical mastery of its craftsmen but

also serves as a tangible link to China's cultural continuity

and reverence for tradition.

Compare with a related pale green jade ewer and cover,

16th/17th century, which was sold at Christie's London,

13 May 2011, lot 1213. See also a rare greyish-green

Exquisitely worked from a generous proportion of white jade

with excellent quality, the present lot is an impressive example of

exquisitely crafted jade vessels which demonstrate the remarkable

craftsmanship and technical virtuosity achieved by the jade ateliers

in Qing dynasty, especially during the Qianlong reign period. The

exquisite quality of the lustrous even white jade stone exemplifies the

finest jade quality made available following the Qianlong emperor's

conquest of the Dzungar Khanate between 1755 and 1759, where

much of the jade was sourced.

Food and drink vessels made of jade were extremely cherished

treasures from as early as the Han dynasty, particularly as they

required great expense and wastage of precious jade to produce.

Therefore, jade teapot carved from high-quality white jade such as

the present lot is notably rare and probably reserved for the imperial.

See five teapots of related form and design in the Palace Museum,

Beijing, from the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in the Compendium

of Collections in the Palace Museum: Jade, vol.10 Qing Dynasty,

Beijing, 2011, pp.178-182, nos.131-135.

and cloisonne enamel ram-head teapot, sold on 3 October 2017, lot

足見工匠之心思。所雕之蝙蝠栩栩如生,五官及翅膀皆以細線加以點

Provenance:

Christie's London, 11 November 2003, lot 54

來源:

倫敦佳士得,2003年11月11日,拍品編號54

The present lot is remarkable for its refined craftsmanship

demonstrated by the fluidly and naturalistically shaped sides imitating

a mellow peach, and the vivid carvings of the bats which added a

tasteful sense to the scholar's object. The superior quality of the

translucent stone and the accomplished jade workmanship resemble

the sophisticated imperial taste during the celebrated Qianlong reign.

While the form, material and artistry of the present lot is pleasing

enough for one to appreciate, the use of peach and bat as the

decorative features also perfectly complemented the object with

the auspicious wishes. Peaches are usually associated with

longevity, representing the wish for a long life. For bats, the Chinese

character itself shares a similar sound as the words for 'fortune' and

'prosperity', which often related to the blessing for having a joyful and

wealthy life. It is also noteworthy that the craftsman decorated the

vessel with five bats, forming the pun wu fu (the five blessings), which

elevated the auspicious meaning and would have been considered

as a perfect birthday gift especially for the senior. See a jade washer

carved in peach-shape along with two bats, in the Alan and Simon

Hartman collection, illustrated in Chinese Jades from the Collection of

Alan and Simone Hartman, Hong Kong, 1996, pl. 107.
