主旨与要义

(Text 1)

M: Have you read the new novel by Emily Johnson?

W: Yeah. I heard that the story is so popular that they are making a fi lm out of it.

(Text 2)

W: Our party will start tomorrow night, so we need the fl owers around three in the afternoon. Do you deliver?

M: Yes, delivery will be free. But, because we’re creating them on such short notice, we have to treat them as a special order and add

5% to your total cost.

(Text 3)

W: Frank, did you hear Mr. Thomson is leaving by the end of this month?

M: Yes. I heard he wants to travel around the world and write historical novels. You know, he’s been a lawyer in our fi rm for 20 years.

I think he’s looking forward to some changes.

(Text 4)

W: I thought that was boring. It was way too long. And the acting wasn’t very good.

M: It had a lot of big stars in it.

W: Yes. But the story itself was terrible.

(Text 5)

W: What must we do? We have to read page 32?

M: Yes. And we have to write about the polluted island we visited last weekend.

W: Do we have to draw the map?

M: Yes. And we need to hand it in to the professor on Thursday.

(Text 6)

W: Have you placed the order for the dishes for the party on the 15th?

M: Yes, six of them. And I’ve also requested fi ve dozen dinner rolls to be delivered that morning.

W: I’m expecting there to be a big turnout. I’m not sure if fi ve dozen is going to be enough.

(Text 7)

W: Holly wasn’t at swimming practice today. Is she ill?

M: No, she is fi ne. She’s in the mountains with her family.

W: Really? Is she mountain biking again?

M: No, she’s learning to climb. She’s got a great teacher.

(Text 8)

M: We haven’t been to Greenbacks for ages. The ticket is a bit expensive, but their service is quite good.

W: Too right. Their screen isn’t that big, but at least they’ve got comfortable chairs.

(Text 9)

W: Let’s go to the park on Sunday.

M: OK, but let’s go in the afternoon. I sleep late on weekends.

W: Then let’s set off at 2 p.m.

(Text 10)

W: David, I’m cooking fi sh for dinner. Do you want potatoes with it?

M: Er ... could we have pizza? We haven’t had that for long.

(Text 1)

M: Hello! I want to make an appointment with Dr. Williams.

W: OK. Dr. Williams is free at 11:15 and 1:45. Which one do you prefer?

M: My daughter is sick, so the earlier the better.

(Text 2)

M: I’m interested in buying this phone. How much is it?

W: There’s 10 percent off today. Let’s see. Four hundred dollars with ten percent off comes to $360. But if you can wait to buy it

on Saturday, you could get 20 percent off.

(Text 3)

W: Tell me about the yoga class.

M: OK. It starts at 6 o’clock and ends at 7:00. The instructor always makes healthy juice for everyone in the evening after class, so

I plan to stick around a bit longer. Maybe until around 7:15.

(Text 4)

W: Sorry, Jack. I can’t meet you at 8:00 as planned, because my bus doesn’t get in until 8:15 and it’ll take me 30 minutes to get to

the restaurant.

M: Don’t worry, Linda. That’ll be OK.

(Text 5)

M: Excuse me. Do you have any idea when the next train comes?

W: The last one was at 2:15 and the next one is at 2:45, so in five minutes.

M: Great. Thank you very much.

(Text 6)

W: Ken, were you in Shanghai on August 20th?

M: No, I wasn’t. I was there the day before the 20th and then on the 20th I went to Beijing to attend a training course on the 21st.

(Text 7)

W: I would like to check out now. My name is Tammy, Room 112.

M: Yes, here we are. The rate for that room is $30. You made a long distance call, and the telephone bill is $12.

(Text 8)

W: My family is coming to visit. Who do I introduce first?

M: I think your parents. They’re the oldest. It’s good to introduce people in order of their age.

W: In my case, it will be my parents, then my sister and last my two younger brothers.

(Text 9)

W: I know it’s your birthday on August 14th — that’s Friday. So do you want to hold a party on that day?

M: No. I’ll have it on Saturday. And my family will go on a camping trip on Sunday.

(Text 10)

W: Can you help me? I’m interested in buying a new computer.

M: You might like this latest model. It is $1,700. For another $100, I can include a printer too.

W: That’s good. I need a printer. OK, I’ll take it.

地点与去向

(Text 1)

W: Is the bank near the supermarket?

M: No, it isn’t. It’s on Second Avenue, across from the movie theater.

W: On the corner of Main and Second Avenue?

M: Yes, that’s right. It’s next to Al’s Coffee Shop.

(Text 2)

W: Excuse me, sir. Could you tell me the way to the Business Center?

M: Sure, go ahead and turn right at the traffic lights into Rainbow Street, then turn left.

W: So I turn left into Ribbon Street?

M: Yes, then you go straight on for about five minutes. The Business Center is on your way right next to the bus station.

(Text 3)

W: Sorry I missed your call, Brian. I was buying food and drinks. I didn’t hear my phone.

W: No problem.

(Text 4)

W: What a busy day! I’m so tired! It was fun, though, and it’s nice to end the day here.

W: Yes, it was, and I’m glad we went there before going shopping.

M: And now I want something to eat. I’m hungry!

(Text 5)

M: Hello, reception.

W: Oh, hello, this is Mrs. Wallstein here from room 202. Is it possible to get my hair done tomorrow before, say, eight-thirty?

M: I’m sorry madam, but the hairdresser’s shop doesn’t open until 9 a.m.

(Text 6)

M: Sara, I’ll meet you by the main door of the station, so I can help you carry luggage.

W: Don’t worry, Mike. I haven’t got anything heavy. I’m on the square now. You can wait for me in the car park.

(Text 7)

M: Hello! I’m calling from Victor’s Cafe. You left your purse here last night.

W: That’s great! I looked everywhere in my office, but it was nowhere to be found, so I thought I left it on the bus.

(Text 8)

W: Will you be driving straight home tonight?

M: Yes, I don’t go to the gym on Thursdays. Why are you asking?

W: My car broke down yesterday and the garage has just called to say it’s ready to pick up. So it would be great if you could

drop me there.

(Text 9)

M: Have you seen my mobile phone anywhere?

W: I saw it on the bed earlier.

M: I’ve used it since then. Did I put it on the desk afterwards?

W: You often leave it on the sofa when you’re watching TV. Oh, you’re right. Look — you couldn’t see it because of the books.

(Text 10)

M: Kyle has the day off today. Has he gone to visit his parents?

M: Yeah, sounds good.

(Text 2)

W: Oh, Tom, please don’t show others the way if you are not sure about it!

M: I am so sorry for misleading you.

M: Good. I can drive you there in my old car.

(Text 7)

W: Would you like to go to the bookstore with me this weekend? There is a book fair there.

M: I wish! But I have dry eyes and I’ll have them examined.

W: Oh, you must have been too tired recently. I think you just need to relax.

(Text 8)

(Text 9)

(Text 10)

M: Where were you last month, Patricia?

W: My mom got a new job in Birmingham so we went there to visit and then we spent some time viewing houses.

M: Wow, so you’re moving house?

W: Maybe, she can travel by car but might be easier if we do.

(Text 4)

W: So the problem is that you want to get a job but you’re not allowed to. Do your parents know how you feel, Andy?

M: I’m afraid not. They only care about my study.

W: Well, I don’t think it possible to work out this problem if you keep it a secret.

M: You’re right. I’ll do it right now.

(Text 5)

W: Are you good at math? What am I doing wrong here?

M: Let me look. You’re missing a few steps. See this number here? You need to follow its path down to this line.

W: Ah, okay! I know where I am now! Thanks! Shall we get some food when we finish?

M: Sounds good. Let’s get burgers!

(Text 6)

W: The task is too hard. I have to do twenty word problems, but they are confusing. They all have to do with travel time and distance.

M: Don’t try to solve the whole thing all at once. First solve this part. Then work on the next part.

(Text 7)

W: I heard you’re going to teach photography at a local college.

M: Yeah. I’m quite nervous.

W: Don’t worry. Just tell the students a few stories of all the places you visited where you took your pictures. I’m sure you’ll be

(Text 10)

M: Hi, I’m planning an anniversary party and I just found out that the sound system was under repair until next week. I need to

rent some equipment for music and a small presentation.

W: Sure. That’s no problem at all. When will you need it?

方式与方法

(Text 1)

W: Oh, no! The schedule just changed again, Tony. Now it says the next bus to Arlington won’t be here for another 30 minutes.

M: We can’t wait that long. Oh, there’s a subway station nearby. It’s within walking distance.

(Text 2)

M: You’re at a new school, aren’t you? How do you get there?

W: I used to ride my bike to my old school but I can’t do that now. There are too many cars on the road. Now I walk there most

days even though it’s quite a long way.

(Text 3)

M: Good morning. Could I speak to Tina Marks please?

W: OK.

(Text 5)

(Text 6)

W: Thanks.

(Text 8)

M: How does your sister go to university every day? Does she take a bus or underground?

W: Oh, neither — because she lives quite close.

M: Sounds great. I have to catch the crowded underground every day.

(Text 9)

W: I got a job working during the school holidays.

M: Cool! Doing what?

W: Well, you know that clothes shop where my mom works? A friend who works with her told her the local hairdresser’s was

W: Oh, I’m sorry. All 10 copies are lent out. They’re due back in about a week. Do you want me to reserve it for you?

M: That’s a good idea. How long do I have to wait for it?

W: Just a few days. ⑪Fill out this form with your name, address, email and phone number, and ⑫we will let you know by

telephone when the book is checked in.

M: Thank you.

(Text 6)

M: Have you taken a tour since you’ve been here?

W: Yes, I went on one last weekend.

M: What was it like?

W: Well, we didn’t see a lot. ⑬We mainly went to a lot of shops. I would’ve preferred to see more of the museums or famous castles

there. I’m not really interested in shopping. ⑭And the bus they took us in was so old and slow. They should put it in the

museum!

M: Really! Did you say anything to the guide about it?

W: Well the problem was, ⑮he didn’t speak English very well. And he wasn’t really very friendly.

M: That’s too bad!

W: But we did have a nice lunch on the tour, ⑯and the whole tour was very cheap, so it wasn’t all bad.

(Text 7)

W: ⑰I’ve been waiting twenty minutes for this bus. Does it always take so long to come?

M: In the rush hour, yes. Is this the first time you’ve taken it?

W: ⑱The first time, and the last, I hope. My car broke down yesterday. If it weren’t for that I wouldn’t be here.

M: I used to take my car into town, but I gave up on that a long time ago. ⑲I could never find anywhere to park, and when I did, I’d

come back and find that I’d been given a ticket.

W: Well, I think it’s so much more convenient that it’s worth paying the fine. But these days the traffic’s getting worse and worse. I

often spend hours in the traffic jams on my way home. It was really tiring.

M: Yeah, that’s true.

W: If there were more buses, I might change my mind. But the service is awful, and they always arrive full up.

M: Yes. But not enough people use them, so the company can’t afford to buy any more buses and pay the drivers.

W: ⑳The government should do something.

M: But people like you and me could do a bit too.

W: Peter, I heard that you got promoted after the boss saw your work on the budget report. Congratulations!

M: Oh, thank you. I was really surprised that Mr. Doddleson was so impressed by my work. It was really unexpected.

W: So what are you doing now that you have taken over as director of accounting?

M: Well, I’m learning all about my new responsibilities and ②I have to get to know my new teammates so I’m really busy.

(Text 2)

M: Excuse me. How much are those jeans?

W: Which ones? Do you mean the black ones?

M: No, the light blue ones. I think black is too dark.

W: Oh, those are $59.

M: Wow, ③I don’t think I can afford them although I like the color.

W: ④The dark blue ones are on sale. The original price was $69, and now they are $30 off. And they’re popular.

M: Emm … Can I try a pair on? I need a large size.

W: OK. (A minute later) Look, it fits you well. And the color matches your T-shirt.

M: ④Yes, I will take it.

(Text 3)

W: Good morning. Doctor Jones’ office.

M: Good morning. It’s David Thompson. I’d like an appointment to see Doctor Jones, please.

W: Just a minute. Well, I’m afraid he’s fully booked all next week. ⑥He won’t be able to see you until Friday the 22nd of March

at 9:15. Is that OK?

M: Friday’s OK, but not in the morning.

W: Then, ⑥there’s 3:30 p.m. the next day. Is that OK?

M: ⑥That’s fine. Thank you.

W: OK, Mr. Thompson. See you.

(Text 4)

W: At lunchtime, I watched that good cooking show, Chef’s Special, and I’ve got some great ideas for some meals we can try out for

dinner.

M: Well, that sounds good. So what’s on your list?

W: Let’s see. We’ve got some meat at home already, but we need something for a salad. We need some tomatoes, carrots and green

onions.

M: Sounds very healthy.

W: ⑦The apples look really good today. Let’s pick some up, too. Plus we need to get some bananas. Would you like some milk or

cheese?

M: No, they are not my taste.

W: Then can you get a box of ice cream?

M: Sure, ⑧I love ice cream best.

W: I think that’s everything we need. ⑨Let’s go home and cook dinner.

(Text 5)

W: Hello, sir. How may I help you today?

M: Hi, ⑩I’d like to buy this computer, the X-K Opus. I read the reviews and it seems like it will be a good fit for me. Do you

W: I’m sorry. Actually, that is just the display model. ⑪The X-K Opus was sold out. However, we have a lot of similar models in

that price range to choose from, like the X-H Opus and the X-R Opus. Come this way, please. You can have a look at them. They

are also the new models of this year. ⑩And they’re a little cheaper than the X-K Opus.

M: Emm … they look not bad. ⑩But I really have my heart set on that model although it is the most expensive in your store.

W: ⑫In that case, you’re welcome to make a special order. Just fill out a form and we should get it ready for you within ten

business days. And we will telephone you when it comes.

(Text 6)

M: Did you get a chance to look over the agenda for the team meeting tomorrow?

W: Yeah. It looks like we have a lot to discuss. I noticed that we have to go over the progress of the new project, review the budget

for the quarter, and brainstorm ideas for our next marketing campaign.

M: Right, and I want to make sure we have enough time to go over everything. So, ⑬I was thinking we could start the meeting at 9

instead of 10. Does that work for you?

W: ⑬Nine is actually better for me. I have a client meeting at 11:30, ⑭that will give me more time to prepare for it and I can get

the earlier train.

M: Perfect, I’ll send out an update with the new time. Is there anything else you want to add?

W: ⑮We should handle the new customer complaints and please remind everyone to make sure we are addressing any potential

issues in a timely manner.

M: Excellent. I’m going to set up some more meetings for the rest of the week.

(Text 7)

M: You look sad.

W: Well, I had a blood test last week. ⑰The doctor said that I had high blood pressure. I’m worried.

M: When we last talked, ⑱you promised there would be less television and hamburgers. But now you’re putting on some weight.

W: It’s easier said than done.

M: Well, I think more fruit and vegetables and regular exercise will improve your health. You can take some exercise in the fitness

center.

W: Well, ⑲do they have any yoga class at your gym?

M: ⑲I’m not sure, but I can look for you. If you join the gym, you can use the swimming pool and take any of the exercise classes

you want for free.

W: Do you think I’d still have to go on a diet to lose weight?

M: I’m not an expert, so I can’t tell you, but ⑳the trainers at the gym will be able to advise you on your diet and can help you

come up with a fitness plan.

W: I saw an ad on a website. There is an apartment which looks pretty good for us.

M: What is it like?

W: It was around 120 m2

M: Great. What about the surrounding area?

W: Very quiet and safe. And it’s got a lot of trees and plants.

M: That’s good. Is the place easily found?

W: Yep, it’s near a bus stop, ②but a long way from my office. It’s near a school, ①which is good for our son.

M: Hmm … well, maybe we should think about living there then.

(Text 2)

M: ③What a great trip to the art museum today! The university is so thoughtful and you seemed to love it.

W: ④Yeah, I’ve always enjoyed art. I need to make more time for it, as it inspires me in my own work.

W: I like a wide range of styles and periods. Right now, I’m really into Impressionism and modern art. Monet’s Impressionist

paintings are some of my favorites. Degas’s and Renoir’s are a close second.

(Text 3)

W: How did you get interested in music?

M: Well, when my wife and I first got our record player, we started to buy all kinds of records — jazz,

country music and rock. ⑤Soon I found that I was buying more country music records than any

other kind.

W: How did you start working for the radio station?

M: I thought there should be a radio program of country songs, so I went to CBC and suggested it. That

was how we started the program called Golden Country Time.

W: Then you were asked to write articles to explain the background of those songs.

M: Yes, ⑥but soon I got tired of running to the library to find information, so I started buying

country song books and building my own library.

(Text 4)

M: I’ve got a letter from Miranda, my new pen friend.

W: Will you invite her to visit you one day?

M: Maybe next year. ⑦She always gets busy in August so July will be best. We have a holiday in December but it’s always so cold

here then.

W: Does she like sports, like you?

M: Yes, she plays basketball from time to time but ⑧she watches lots of football matches and always practices it. She told me she

had no interest in tennis. But that’s my favorite sport.

W: What other things does she like doing?

M: She’s good at drawing people. She won a prize last year for a drawing of her brother, and look, we often keep in touch by email

and ⑨she put this one of her mother in her email. I’d like her to send one of herself.

(Text 5)

W: Hi Tom, you look unhappy. How are you?

M: ⑩We always lose our matches. I hate losing.

W: Oh, Tom. You know it’s not all about winning. Playing by the rules and giving your best is the most important thing.

M: You know football is my favorite sport! I want to win a game though.

W: I know. Ah, well, ⑪I’m really looking forward to the next club game. It’s basketball next. I like watching basketball games

and I play basketball.

M: When did you start to play it?

W: ⑫It has been nine years since I started to play. I’m 17 years old now.

M: Wow, that’s a long time. What a shame we can’t do any swimming in the club. I love swimming.

(Text 6)

M: Hi, Mary. ⑬Have you seen they’re building a new shopping center out near the motorway?

W: Are they? That’s great. We need a good shopping center around here.

M: I don’t think so. I mean there are lots of good shops on the high street, aren’t there?

W: Yes, but shopping centers are more convenient.

M: Not really. There is always a long way out of town.

W: OK, that’s true, but ⑭there’s no traffic and it’s always easy to park the car ...

M: Alright, but that’s no good if you haven’t got a car — like me.

W: Well, you could get the bus. And things are always cheaper in centers …

M: They’re cheap at first, and then when all of the small shops close, they put up the prices! ⑮Anyway, you get much better service

in smaller shops.

W: Yes, I agree, but I haven’t got time to go round lots of little shops. It’s better to get everything in one place.

M: OK, well, you go to the new center, but all the small shops will close, you’ll see!

M: Welcome to the Grange Art Center. My name is John Sands, and I will be giving information about courses at the center. Well,

fi rst of all, let me tell you about the courses we off er. ①There are courses in painting, drawing and photography. And each

class lasts for 30 weeks, except photography which is 33 weeks. All classes are on weekday evenings, and each class lasts for

an hour. Drawing is on Mondays and Fridays, and painting and photography are on Tuesdays and Thursdays. ②At the end of

the year, you will have to be here on weekends to help your teachers to set up the end-of-the-year exhibition. ③There is

a timetable in your information pack on your desk. You will also fi nd an entry form in the information pack. Can I ask you,

please, to return the form to us by the end of the month if you wish to take one of our courses?

(Text 2)

W: Welcome, everyone. I’m sure you’ll want to know how long the walk will take in the beautiful countryside. Well, ④there are two

possible routes, one of which takes four hours, and the other fi ve. We’ll be taking the longer one. We’ll be at our destination

by around two. ⑤Please look out for bikes during the journey. Cars aren’t a problem, as our route avoids public roads.

For people interested in wildlife, there’s plenty to see. The forest is famous for its frogs, but they stay hidden away during the

daytime unfortunately.

Finally, you’ll want to get back to where we started! There used to be a railway station in the area, but it’s been many years since

a train went through there. ⑥There’s a bus service, although you may have to wait a while. A taxi driver will never come this

far out of town, so that’s really the only option.

Right, let’s go!

(Text 3)

M: Hello, everyone. I work for a company called Great Ship Adventures. Now we have a program which aims to help the personal

development of young people aged 12 to 25, by enabling them to take part in sea-going adventures. The company has 3 large

sailing ships.

⑨You don’t need to have sailed before or know anything at all about sailing. We have specially trained workers whose jobs

are to make sure that everyone can take part safely. You’ll join the ship for a two-week-long trip. ⑧It is a hands-on experience

rather than taking courses. You’ll become an important part of the crew and this involves so much more than just sailing

the ship. It’ll include preparing meals, maintaining equipment as well as cleaning the living and sleeping areas.

Believe me, you’ll not only learn how to sail but also become good at teamwork and develop your communication skills.

W: Good morning everyone. Welcome to our weight-loss camp. Thank you for joining our camp. Now I’m going to spend a few

minutes talking about the schedule. Please take out your handbook and take a look at the schedule. Now we’re having our first

briefing meeting. Right after that, ⑩we’ll do some warm-up exercise to prepare you for the activities. You should write

“activity period” for the time from 10:00 to 12:00. ⑪You can do activities such as soccer, baseball, rock climbing and kickboxing! Then, we’ll have lunch together at 12:30 p.m. After lunch, you can enjoy a one-hour rest before another activity period at

3 p.m. We understand you’ll be tired after the activities, so you’ll enjoy some nutritional snacks at 5 p.m. ⑫Club time will begin

at 5:30 p.m. That will last for one and a half hours. During the time we will offer activities such as photography, biking, drama

and dance. OK, that’s all from me. We hope you all have a great time.

(Text 5)

M: Do you love singing, dancing and acting? Then come to Silver Star Theater School. We have courses for children between nine

and sixteen years old.

⑬If you are fourteen, fifteen or sixteen, the price is only eighty-five pounds for a week. If you are under fourteen, it costs

ten more pounds per week. We offer nice books for free. We will also give you any special clothes you need. ⑭The only thing

you should bring with you is your lunch.

The courses are quite interesting, but you will work really hard from Monday to Thursday. ⑮Then family and friends can come

and watch you in a special show in the afternoon on the last weekday.

The first summer course begins on July the twenty-first and you must book by the twelfth. ⑯If you want to join the Silver Star

School, call Mary and ask for a booking form today. The phone number is eight double four seven, six nine five three, and you

can call between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. every day.

W: Now listen, everyone. ⑰Before we get started on our lesson today I’ve got an announcement. It’s about a competition. It’s

run by a young people’s Internet magazine called Creative Designs and they’re inviting you to design something for their Internet

magazine. Some of you took part last year, didn’t you? I remember you designed a poster. ⑱Well, this time they’re asking you

for something different — a T-shirt! They say it can look however you want it to — you can choose the color and the words you

put on it. ⑲The only thing is it must have a picture somewhere on it. They’ll be announcing who’s won on May 27th, so your

designs must get to them by the 12th. ⑰ ⑳If you’re one of the winners, you’ll get a drawing book and pens — very useful for

your studies. If we have five prize-winning designs, ⑰as an art school, we’ll get a computer! Here’re books on design for you

(Text 1)

W: Most young people today, unfortunately, have very unhealthy eating habits. When eating out, they choose fast food restaurants.

However, fast food restaurants are not their only source of unhealthy food. ①The modern-day family usually has both

parents working outside the home, and this means parents don’t often have the time to prepare healthy nutritious meals.

Supermarkets today are filled with pre-packaged instant foods. Therefore, even home-cooked meals might not be that nutritious.

Another contributing factor to young people’s unhealthy eating habits is the fact that there seems to be no regular mealtimes these

days. ③Most teenagers don’t have breakfast because they don’t have time. ②And they don’t want to spend a lot of time

having lunch. As a result, the most popular foods among youngsters at lunchtime are snacks. After school, most young

people are hungry, so they fill up on biscuits, cookies or other unhealthy snacks. Therefore, the average young persons’ diet is

unhealthier now than it has ever been!

(Text 2)

W: I’m Sally Evans, an illustrator and author. I never expected to end up in this career. My parents and art teachers didn’t think I had

any talent, even though I was known for my vivid imagination and storytelling skills. Despite this, I pursued my love of painting

and attended Art College. ⑤Right after graduation, I applied for jobs at art galleries and advertising agencies, but was

rejected. Starting out as an illustrator wasn’t easy. I struggled to find work and made little money at first. ⑥Later, I wrote and

illustrated a children’s book about a boy named Tommy, and was surprised when a publisher agreed to print it. It sold

well, and Tommy became a well-known character.

④My advice for anyone who wants to pursue their passion: don’t be discouraged by difficulties or rejections. I remember

how crushed I felt, but I didn’t let that stop me. I kept working and eventually I found success. ④Remember that success often

comes after failure.

(Text 3)

M: Good afternoon, everyone. Today I’d like to tell you about a great girl named Mackenzie.

Mackenzie hurt her knee when she was just ten years old. A week later, the pain was still there. Then she found out about a

disease called RSD. ⑦There’s no cure for the pain. Her doctors tried everything: medicine, exercise, and other treatments.

Nothing worked … except books.

⑧Mackenzie read lots of books. The books helped her stop thinking about the pain. And she decided to help other children

forget their pain, too. She found out about a treatment center for children nearby. The center had a new library, but no books.

⑨She asked all her friends and her parents’ friends to give books. Then she put ads in newspapers and made a website.

Mackenzie’s goal was to give 300 books to the library. But she soon had 3,000 books! Today that number is more than 40,000.

She started an organization — Sheltering Books. It now helps children in many states in the U.S.

(Text 4)

W: Good morning, everyone. Now I’m going to talk about the high school graduation ceremony in America. The graduation

ceremony itself takes place at the end of May or beginning of June. The ceremony usually includes music, awards, and a guest

speaker. ⑩After the speeches, students walk to the front of the room to receive their certificates from the headmaster. They order

rings, designed especially for their class. Another tradition is to have their photographs taken. These photographs are used for the

class yearbook. Students have special cards, called announcements, printed to send to friends and relatives to tell them about their

graduation. ⑪If you receive an announcement, you should send a present or money to the graduate. After the ceremony,

⑫families usually have graduation parties for friends and relatives. Then in the evening, many schools hold a dance for

graduates and friends. It’s a day and a night that high school seniors remember for a long time.

(Text 5)

M: Good morning, everyone! ⑯Today, I’ll tell you about the power of networking. ⑬Starting college, I was shy. I spent most

of my time studying. However in my second year of college, I attended a career fair on campus. ⑭I was interested in tech and

knew some of the top companies would be attending. So I approached a representative from Bingle. To my surprise, the

representative was very friendly. We talked for a few minutes about my goals and eagerness, and he offered to connect me with

some engineers at the company who could offer guidance. ⑮Over the next few weeks, I spoke to engineers and scheduled

informal interviews. They shared their experiences and insights with me, and one offered me work experience. During this

time, I met other trainees and full-time employees who I was able to learn more about the industry from. This even helped secure

a job offer before graduation. None of this would have been possible if I hadn’t made the effort to build relationships. ⑯So, my

fellow students, I encourage you to make meaningful connections. You never know where these might take you in your life.

Thank you.

(Text 6)

M: Thank you very much. Well, ⑰it is really great to be back at university again. The thing that I want to tell you today is this:

education is important. ⑱When I came to the U.S., I was only thinking about being a woodworker, but I could not read the

newspaper and I could not understand the news on television or movies or anything like this, so I entered the city college

to take English classes for foreign students. I was very proud that I was going to a college because you know, when you are

15 years old in my country, you finish school and then you learn a trade. And that’s exactly what I did. When I was 15 years old,

I learned how to make woodwork. A year later, I came to America. ⑲Luckily, I met a very good teacher who encouraged me

to take some math classes, business classes and history classes and I became a full-time college student. After graduation, I

started making money, because I was really good at math. You know, how to work out everything with math is so important. This

is something that I learned when I started my own business, which is doing really well.
