Reggie Carrillo is an environmental activist who lives in the Southwestern U.S. city of
Phoenix, Arizona. He recently said that climate change affects the temperatures of city
neighborhoods. “To understand climate change, to understand the urban heat island effect, you
have to understand the history,” said Carrillo. He wants to share his knowledge with his neighbors
to cool his community. In Phoenix, some neighborhoods do not have many trees and open spaces. Temperatures are
as much as seven degrees Celsius higher than in other areas of Phoenix with more trees. Those
parts of the city were built with mostly roads and buildings but not much green space. That has
helped create what Carrillo and others call an “urban heat island”. Carrillo has learned about the city’s history by attending the Urban Heat Leadership
Academy run by groups trying to conserve natural resources. It gets involved in cities like Phoenixand Atlanta, Georgia by planting trees and building community gardens. The academy helps teach people like Carrillo about why their living areas are so hot. It also
teaches them how to organize activities that will help cool things down. It is making public art toteach people about climate change and is giving out small trees for people to plant. In Phoenix, Carrillo has learned that people who live in poor parts of the city often sleep withtheir windows closed on hot nights because they are worried about crime. He said “the rest of us
need to know what people experience” so organizations like this can “combat the problem.” Carrillo hopes to build a walking area that will be known as a “cool corridor”, a place that has
local plants that can help reduce temperatures. Summer temperatures in Phoenix can be dangerous. Last summer, the highest temperature
was over 46 degrees Celsius. The heat was blamed for over 300 deaths. So they are planting fruit
trees including peaches, apples and oranges to get enough food in another part of Phoenix each

A French power producer, HDF Energy, expects its hydrogen energy power station in
Namibia to produce electricity by 2024. And HDF Energy announced the plan for the southern
African country publicly recently. This plant in Namibia would be Africa’s first. HDF Energy is
also considering new projects across Africa. The project is expected to cost about $181 million. Once operated, it will supply electrical
power, 24 hours a day throughout the year. It will increase the electricity supply to Namibia, which imports 40 percent of power from neighboring South Africa. Namibia is one of the world’s
sunniest and least densely-populated countries. It wants to use its great potential for solar and
wind energy to produce green hydrogen power. And Namibia wants to become a renewable energycenter in Africa. Hydrogen power is considered clean when it is made with reproducible power. It is seen as animportant way to reduce carbon-based fuels in the energy industry. The project will use solar
panels(电池板)to produce electricity. Electrolyzers produce hydrogen which can be easily storedby using electricity to separate hydrogen from oxygen in water. Another company named Hyphen Hydrogen Energy is in talks with Namibia’s government tosecure an agreement for a planned hydrogen project. European Union says they also plan a deal
with the country to support its green hydrogen industry. The German government has already
agreed to invest $41.8 million in Namibia’s hydrogen plan. European nations are trying to reduce
their dependence on Russian energy. Obeth Kandjoze, director-general of Namibia’s National
Planning Commission said EU financial support was likely to be limited, but a financial deal couldbring in other investors. 27. What do we know about Namibia according to the text?
A. It has the longest sunny days in the world. B. It is the renewable energy center of Africa. C. It owns Africa’s first hydrogen energy power station. D. Its power supply highly depends on neighbouring countries. 28. Which word could be the best to describe the hydrogen energy?

One Thing You Can Do Right Now to Help Your Heart
Many diseases and medical conditions are caused by things out of our control. Yet experts
say you can control and even prevent many risk factors that increase your chances of dying. An unhealthy lifestyle can put you at great risk of heart disease and stroke. Poor diet and a
lack of physical exercise both increase your risk of heart disease. 31
But there is something else you can do. And it is free and easy. Smile! Anand, a heart disease
specialist at University of Missouri, advises his patients to smile. “When we smile, the chemicals
that are released are more positive.” 32 These prevent blood from flowing to the heart or the brain. The most common
reason for these blockages is a build-up of fatty deposits on the inner walls of the arteries (动脉). When you feel stressed or under pressure, your body releases many natural hormones (荷尔蒙) that will increase your heart rate and blood pressure and also increase sugar in the bloodstream. If you are truly in danger, these hormones can help you. 33 However, when people are
stressed for long periods of time, they may not make the best decisions about what to eat. They
may overeat, smoke or drink too much alcohol. They may not get enough exercise or sleep. 34
Dr. Anand says1 a smile may be one way to help. It does not involve drugs. It is not invasive
(有扩散危害的) like a surgical operation. It is free and it has no bad side effects. Once smiling, people are relaxing. 35 Probably this just may provide a little extra protection to
everyone’s heart health. A. And all of these can lead to health problems. B. This can inspire people’s excitement and power. C. They are part of what we call our fight-or-flight response. D. They can’t prevent heart diseases and stokes from happening. E. The main cause of heart attacks and strokes are blockages in blood vessels. F. This relaxation directly lowers blood pressure and improves sugar levels in the blood. G. So doctors urge us to eat healthy foods, get exercise, stop smoking and limit our alcohol intake.

45 . Because of you, she’s going to get home safe. Thank you. You are 46 .”
In the mirror, I could see the driver smiling proudly. All of a sudden, I felt a flash of

Where would you find the largest impact crater (陨石坑) on Earth? South Africa, Siberia, Antarctica, or Mexico. South Africa’s Vredefort crater is the world’s largest 51 (know)
impact crater. An impact crater, as the name suggests, 52 (form) when something like an asteroidcrashes into something else like Earth. This more recent phenomenon was not caused by an impact
but it is one of 17 craters that 53 (appear) mysteriously in the Russian arctic since 2013. Scientists don’t know 54 this happened. They do know the hole’s about 150 feet
deep. After it was discovered last summer, they flew a drone inside the crater to capture dozens of

learn more. Methane (甲烷) gas somehow accumulates in the permafrost of Siberia. They’re not sure
whether the gas comes 56 deep inside the Earth or near its surface but they believe that
as the methane builds in a cave in the ice it forms 57 mound (土堆).And that mound
grows until it finally explodes, blowing off ice and 58 (leave) behind the crater. Scientists are using computer technology 59 (predict) where this will happen next. These craters appear in 60 (scarce) populated areas. They’re usually discovered by
accident or during helicopter flights of the area.

As online learning becomes more common and more and more resources are becoming
digital form, some people have suggested that public libraries should be shut down and everyone
should be given an iPad with an e-reader subscription. Supporters of this idea state that it will save money because libraries are expensive to
maintain. They also believe it will encourage more people to read because they won’t have to
travel to a library to get a book. They could also access more materials because libraries won’t
have to buy physical copies of books. However, it would be a serious mistake to replace libraries with tablets. First, digital books
and resources are associated with less learning and more problems. A study done on tablet vs bookreading found that people read 20-30% slower on tablets, obtain 20% less information, and
understand 10% less of what they read compared to people who read the same information in print. Additionally, staring too long at a screen has been shown to cause more health problems, including dry eyes and headaches. Second, it is incredibly narrow-minded to assume that the only service libraries offer is booklending. Libraries can keep community connected. One neighborhood found that, after a local
library community events, over a third of residents reported feeling more connected to their
community. Similarly, a survey conducted in 2015 found that nearly two-thirds of American adults
feel that closing their local library would have a major impact on their community. People see
libraries as a way to connect with others, which tablets can’t offer nearly as well or as easily.
36
While replacing libraries with tablets may seem like a simple solution, it would encourage
people to spend even more time looking at digital screens. In many areas, libraries are such an
important part of the community network that they could never be replaced by a simple object. 28. Why do people want to close libraries?
A. To pursue economy and convenience. B. To promote e-books and subscription. C. To advocate e-reading and e-learning. D. To follow e-learning trend and fashion. 29. How does the author support his idea in Paragraph 3?

Many of the threats currently facing our oceans, such as rising temperatures and pollution, are widely understood. However, there are a number of relatively unknown emerging issues that
are poorly understood in terms of their potential impact, whether good or bad, on marine
environments. Several are linked to the exploitation (开发) of newly in-demand ocean resources. In the hope that early identification will support scientists, conservationists and
policy-makers to address these new challenges in plenty of time, 30 experts in marine and coastal
ecosystems have proposed a list of the 15 issues most likely to have a significant impact on oceanbiodiversity over the next five to ten years. Here, we will take a closer look at one of those issues. In coastal seas around the world, the water is growing darker. This darkness, caused by
increasing amounts of sediment (沉积物) and nutrients, is a relatively little-studied phenomenon, but a potentially serious cause for concern. A range of activities are responsible for coastal darkening. Rainwater runoff fromagricultural
land carries fertilizers, animal waste and sediment into rivers that march into the sea. Increasing
rainfall and permafrost (永久冻土) melting (both the result of human-driven climate change) alsocause sudden increases in ocean nutrient levels, leading to light-blocking algal blooms (藻华) . Digging and bottom searching stir up seafloor sediments. Light influences marine life in a surprising number of ways. It passes through seawater, heating it and generating currents, and is absorbed by the large quantities of microscopic
phytoplankton (浮游植物) upon which most marine life depends. Even moonlight, 400,000 times
37
fainter than sunlight, is responsible for the nightly movements of many of the oceans’ tiniest
inhabitants and, every year, hundreds of coral species spawn (产卵) at the same time, triggered bythe light of a full moon. As the clarity of seawater is reduced, light is prevented from entering the water column. At
moderate levels, coastal darkening can have positive impacts, such as limiting coral bleaching (珊瑚白化) , but the benefits are few. Darkening could change species’ behaviour, distribution and
even composition, profoundly altering their ecosystems and ability to store carbon. Poisonous
chemicals such as methyl mercury (甲基汞) , which is broken down by sunlight, could spread
higher up the food chain, reaching the fish that we eat. 32. What do we know about the less-known emerging issues?
A. Their impact has been well known by most people. B. Several may affect the ocean biodiversity greatly in the future. C. All are related to the exploitation of ocean resources. D. The early identification has addressed these new challenges. 33. Why do the coastal seas get darker?
A. Water from rivers gets into the sea. B. People show little concern about the coast. C. The phenomenon is relatively little-studied D. Amounts of nutrients and sediment increase. 34. What is the influence of darkening seawater?
A
. More coral bleaching. B. Stable species’ behavior. C. Unsafe seafood for humans. D. Rapid breakdown of chemicals. 35. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Coastal Darkening B. Rising Temperatures
C. Marine Biodiversity D. Responsible Activities

After spotting the signs that your brain needs a little TLC (tender loving care), it’s a matter of
maintaining a healthy sleep pattern, fitness routine and healthy relationships. 36
Maintain a healthy sleep pattern
Stress impacts sleep quality which in turn affects your brain health. 37 It is
recommended that we should get into a bedtime routine, avoid bright lights one hour before bed
and regularly use mindfulness or meditation apps. 38
A longer and more intense workout is not necessarily the key to strong brain health, as this
can create extra stress and reduce oxygen circulation in the body. In fact, a 30 minute walk each day in the fresh air boasts long and short-term benefits to the
38
overall health of our brain and body. 39 “Forest bathing” is highly recommended to calmbrain activity, as well as boost mood, energy and concentration in the long term. Surround yourself with healthy relationships
40 Quality relationships support a healthy brain. Relationships that drain energy
and emotion on a day-to-day basis can negatively affect brain health. Surround yourself with
positivity to help brighten your days. If you find a balance between sleep, exercise and relationships, you’ll be taking those steps
you need to feel much more positive and recharged. Rather than waking up tired, you’ll be readyfor the day ahead!

“Painters, do not fear perfection. You will never achieve it! Just try as you will if you are
ordinary. Even if you paint terribly, badly, people will still see that you are ordinary. ”
-Salvador Dali “Every morning when I awake,” wrote the artist of the soft watches and burning giraffes, “the
greatest of joys is mine: that of being Salvador Dalí. . .” The Spanish artist, so famous and so rich, was creative not only in his art. He talked nonstop too; his favorite topic was how to be a genius. “Oh Salvador,” he concluded, “now you know the truth: that if you act the genius, you will be

Had he lived during the Renaissance (文艺复兴), Dalí would have been recognized sooner as
a genius. In our age, though, which he felt was growing increasingly stupid, Dalí represented an
air of challenging and annoying everyone else. Today he is ranked alongside Picasso as one of the
modernist greats, and the general public quite clearly loves his art as well; therefore, it is difficult
to understand why he should still be seen as so challenging and annoying, and why many people
should still consider him as mad. Dalí himself declared: “The only difference between myself anda madman is the fact that I am not mad!” Writer Michel Déon once said, “His personality -whether
it is loved or hated-is based on something deep and appealing, and that is his roots and his feelings. Roots that reach deep into the earth, absorbing everything that has been produced in four thousandyears of painting, architecture and sculpture. Feelings that are picking up things to come, fromthe
future, expecting it and flying to it at lightning speed. It cannot be emphasized enough that Dalí is
a man of tireless scientific curiosity.” One might say that Dalí was typical of his age: he had
grasped how to make himself a star. 18. What does Dali actually want to say to other painters?
A. “Be brave to show yourself.” B. “Be honest to yourself.” C. “Be pleased to stay ordinary.” D. “Be respectful to the public.” 19. How does the author look at Dalí?
A. He was too proud of himself. B. He was undoubtedly a genius. C. He was too challenging and annoying. D. He was unfairly understood. 20. What can we learn from the last paragraph about Dalí?
A. He was not only learned but advanced. B. He was not only honest but emotional. C. He was a scientist rather than an artist. D. He was a star rather than a genius. 21. What aspect of Dalí is the text mainly about?
A. His amazing achievements in art. B. His special ability in learning. C. His extraordinary belief in himself. D. His annoying behavior in public. D
It’s an attractive idea: by playing online problem-solving, matching and other games for a
few minutes a day, people can improve such mental abilities as reasoning, verbal (语言的) skills
and memory. But whether these games deliver on those promises is up for debate. This year, in perhaps the biggest real-world test of these programs, neuroscientists (神经学家) at Canada’s Western University gathered 8, 563 volunteers globally through Cambridge BrainSciences, a Toronto-based company that provides assessments to measure healthy brain function. Participants filled out an online question form about their training habits, opinions about trainingbenefits and which, if any, program they used. Some 1, 009 participants reported using brain
42
training programs for about eight months, on average, though the length of time ranged fromtwoweeks to more than five years. Next,
the volunteers completed 12 mental tests about memory, reasoning and verbal skills. When researchers looked at the results, they saw that brain trainees on average had no mental
edge over the other group in memory, verbal skills and reasoning. Even among those who had
used training programs for at least 18 months, brain training didn’t boost thinking abilities above
the level of people who didn’t use the programs. “No matter how we dealt with the data, we were unable to find any evidence that brain
training was associated with mental abilities,” says a researcher. That held true whether the teamanalyzed participants by age, program used, education or economic situation - all were similar tothe group who didn’t use the programs. However, brain training may be beneficial when it is
connected with real problems in life, researchers say. The real world may be the best brain trainer. They suggest that we practice those skills in different real-life situations. “That’s a much better use
of one’s time than sitting at a computer and doing little tasks.” 22. How were the 1, 009 test participants different from the others?
A. They completed more mental tests. B. They showed better mental abilities. C. They filled an online question form. D. They had brain training experiences. 23. Which of the following best replaces the underlined word “edge” in paragraph 3?
A. Advantage. B. Power. C. Illness. D. Control. 24. What do the researchers suggest about brain training?
A. It should provide scientific data. B. It should promote online programs. C. It should settle problems in life. D. It should benefit more researchers. 25. Which of the following is the best title of the text?
A. Debate Raised after Research? B. Online Games Boost Brainpower?

Starting in September, shoppers at British supermarket chain Waitrose &Partners may notice
a small yet significant difference. Nearly 500 fresh products will no longer have “best before” dates printed on them. This move is designed to reduce food waste by encouraging shoppers to use
their own judgement as to whether a product is still good to eat, rather than relying on a printed
date.Marija Rompani, director of Waitrose&Partners, points out 70% of all food wasted in the U. K. happens at home. U. K. households throw away 4. 5 million tons of eatable food every year, meaning that all the energy and resources used in food production are wasted. He says this move
will save money at a time of rising food costs and increasing financial pressures. By using up
existing fresh food in our homes, we can also save on our weekly household food shopping, whichis becoming an increasingly pressing concern for many. Waitrose-Partners is not the only supermarket to make such changes in recent years. Another
British chain, Morrison’s, made headlines in January for removing “use by” dates on milk, urgingcustomers to do a test with their noses to determine whether or not the milk is still good to drink. Tesco removed “best before” dates on more than 100 fresh food products in 2018, and
MarksSpencer did the same this summer for over 300 products after a successful smaller trial. “Best before” typically refers to the date before which an item will have best taste and texture. Passing the date does not mean it goes bad — just that it’s less good. “Use by” refers to safety andwill still be applied to Waitrose & Partners products where there’s a risk of food poisoning if
consumed after the date printed on the packaging. There are exceptions if the item has been frozenahead o£ its “use by” date. 23. What does Waitrose&-Partners encourage shoppers to do?
A. Save money through buying no more than necessary. B. Do household shopping weekly to guarantee fresh food. C. Rely on printed dates for the quality guarantee period o£ products. D. Use their own judgement to decide whether a product is good to eat. 24. What may Marija Rompani agree with?
A. Increasing food production. B. Saving money spent on food. C. Reducing the pressure of supermarkets. D. Listening to the pressing concern of consumers.
47

Listening to birds sing or watching them fly is more than just entertaining. Being around
birds offers benefits for emotional well-being, a new study finds. Researchers used a phone app to collect information on how this specific nature exposure
could be good for mental wellness. “Most previous studies have looked at the benefits of nature as a whole,” says lead author
Ryan Hammoud, a research assistant at King’s College London. “We chose to focus on birdlife totry and understand which specific characteristics of nature benefit mental health. None of the
previous studies had investigated this in real-time and real-world contexts. For their experiments, researchers used the Urban Mind app to follow 1,292 people who
completed nearly 27,000 assessments. Participants were from the United Kingdom, the EuropeanUnion, and the United States. Three times each day, the app asked users whether they could hear
or see birds. They were asked to answer follow-up questions on their mental state at the time, so
researchers could see if there was a connection and how long it lasted. Mental well-being was measured with questions about whether they were feeling confident, relaxed, happy, for example, or more negative feelings such as whether they felt anxious, stressed, or lonely. The study collected data on people who have mental health conditions and those without. They discovered that bird activity is linked to improvements in emotional health in those who
don’t have mental health concerns, as well as those who have been diagnosed with depression. They discovered that the effects were still observed in the following assessment which was up to
eight hours later. This exciting research shows just how much the sight and the sound of birdsong lift the
spirits. It captures evidence that our senses are stimulated by birdsong, which is a precious part of
nature that should be experienced. 27. In what way is the research different from previous ones?
48
A. It discovered the entertaining part of birds. B. It looks at humans as a valuable part of nature. C. It looks at the benefits of a specific aspect of nature. D. It discovered the contributing factors to emotional health. 28. Why did Urban Mind app ask the participants questions?
A. To cheer up the participants. B. To provide real-time guidance. C. To record the locations of birds. D. To collect data for the research. 29. What can be learned about the effect birds have on the participants?
A. It lasts for hours. B. It’s still uncertain. C. It depends on health conditions. D. It’s linked to where the birds are seen. 30. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Nature Exposure Is Good for Mental Wellness
B
. Seeing or Hearing Birds Is Good for Well-being
C. Scientists Are Researching into Specific Characteristics of Nature
D. A Phone App Is Helping Collect Data in Real-world Experiments

prevalent (盛行的). Actually, you don’t have to force your kids into reading but rather encourage

way, which can always make kids laugh. Do make reading together a cuddle (依偎) moment. It
can’t be a rushed activity. Take a breath and let the day go, and then move into story time. 34
Getting kids into books can take many different forms. Traditional books are great, but have
you thought about getting them into stories via audiobooks (有声读物)? 35 And once
