Phillip Allen’s home housing his collection

Phillip Allen was a private but very kind man, who always greeted people with a friendly smile and the utmost
respect. He had a witty sense of humour and a contagious laugh, and will be greatly missed. He was a discerning
and wide-ranging collector, and a valued member of the Oriental Ceramic Society, having done much to help the
organisation and its activities. Phillip contributed six articles to the Transactions of the Oriental Ceramic Society
between 1988 and 2012, some concerned with visits he had arranged for members, others on Yixing wares, ivories,
the use of porcelain in English houses and the repair of porcelain.
He was born in Birmingham on June 20th 1938, and was schooled in a private Catholic school. He started collecting
antiques at a very young age (around 12 years old), after being influenced by an aunt and uncle of his. He was very
fond of his mother, and often shared little quirks that she had taught him. He was an avid reader, and was always keen
on learning and expanding his knowledge. Phillip’s career was spent at the Birmingham Central Library, where he was
initially the head of language and literature and later the head of the history and geography departments, work that he
greatly enjoyed. He was a great traveller, and in the 1960s and 1970s spent time in Iran, where he made many friends
and gained a lasting respect for Persian culture and cuisine.
While working at the library Phillip met and became friends with Shahid Amin, a friendship that has endured for
more than 50 years. Shahid recalls that: “From the very beginning of our friendship he was warmly respected and
regarded as a member of the family, and later by my three children who also adored him and viewed him as my brother,
their Uncle Phillip. We all went on many outings together, to these great manor houses, museums and of course local
antique shops. Phillip would love sharing his knowledge with the kids, and anyone who asked. As the children grew
older, he also became their mentor and friend, a role he took very seriously and I know enjoyed greatly.”
PHILLIP ALLEN

Porcelain display in the dining room
Phillip on a trip to the Far East with
fellow members of the OCS
7
I first met Phillip in the late 1970s, when he made frequent visits to the Victoria
and Albert Museum to ask the opinion and advice of John Ayers.
After John retired, Phillip continued to visit and to engage in lively debate with
my colleagues and myself. After retirement, the pace of his collecting accelerated,
and he unearthed many rare treasures at provincial auction houses and antique
stores. He had an unerring eye for a bargain, and for overlooked or mis-catalogued
treasures. A visit to Phillip’s home was a rare treat for anyone interested in objects,
that were housed in every room on shelves, seats and cupboards and manifested
in many media: bronze, porcelain, jade, rhinoceros horn, bamboo, paper, silk
and wood.
Retirement also gave Phillip the opportunity to volunteer for activities connected
to his life interests. He became traveller organiser for the OCS, and managed
several innovative and informative trips for members both in the UK and abroad.
He also worked for the Sir Victor Sassoon Chinese Ivories Trust, becoming
its Honorary Secretary. In 2016 I was privileged to publish a catalogue of the
Sir Victor Sassoon Chinese Ivories Collection, together with Phillip, and with a
contributary essay by Shih Ching-fei. Work on the catalogue took more than two years, during which time Phillip and
I reviewed each piece in the collection, and Shahid took excellent photographs which illustrate the book. During the
exercise I marvelled at Phillip’s extensive knowledge and his discerning eye. Through careful handling and discussion of
objects he taught me many things.
