Padparadscha, same as ruby and sapphire, belongs to the corundum and is one of the rarest
and most sought-after varieties of corundum. As early as the mid-19th century, it had been
stated in gemmological literature that padparadscha refered to ‘lotus color’. In modern
days, although the standard of the color definition of padparadscha varies slightly from one
gemmological laboratory to another, it is altogether rigorous, requiring that the stone have a very
subtle balance of orange and pink hue, and the brightness of the color be light to medium.
The 23.48 carats padparadscha sapphire and diamond ring presented at this spring auction,
originated from the legendary and historical mine in Sri Lanka, is of a perfect blend of orange and
pink hue. The soft, dreamy and mesmerizing color, along with the magnificent carat size, makes
it a truly breath-taking gift from nature.
