During the two years of IGCSE, the numberofcoursesstayed thesamebut thediffculty increased.Facedwithfrequentunittests, usedmind maps to organize key points in subjects like Chemistry and Biology, and that really helped me.My outstanding performancein theIGCSEmath exam furtherbuilt upmyconfidence, andaftertryingout subjects like Geography,Business, and Computer Science,Idecided onthe pathofscience.

During A-level,Ipicked fourscience subjects:Physics,Mathematics,FurtherMathematics, andChemistry. The first yearwas the busiest and most unforgettable. For me,the two math courses were prety easy;theyjustneededalotof practice,soItrained myselftobequickandaccurateduring exams, making things a lot easier:With Physics and Chemistry, Ihad to focus on understanding the concepts and contexts.Iasked teacherslots ofquestions inclass andmadesuretogo through theexam syllabuses andmodelanswerstocovereverything.Duringself study,Ialso read more books about physics to get readyforuniversity.
Reflections and Experiences of UniversityApplication
Iappliedtoeightuniversitiesintotal, includingfive intheUK,such as Cambridge and Imperial College London, as wellas HKU and PolyU in Hong Kong, and theUniversity ofToronto inCanada.Mymain goalwas Cambridge,soIdedicatedmost of my energy to applyingtoUKuniversities. Thepersonal statement is a crucial part of the university application process.“Good things come to those who wait"—for me,writing this statement was a long yet rewarding journey. It was about capturingmypassionforphysicsandreflectingon the achievementsI'vemadesofar.Isat at my desk, pondering over what to say andhow tosay it,all whilecrafting thekey that would open the door to myfuture atuniversity.Theintroductionwas unique, thecontentvariedanddiverse, andtheconclusion lookedforwardtothefuture.Aftertwoandahalf months of revisions with guidance from my counselor,Ifinally completedmy statement.
Among the universities I applied to,only Cambridge andImperialCollegeLondonrequired written exams. The CambridgeNatural Sciences Admissions Assessment (NSAA) consists of two parts:thefirst part includes 20questions each on Mathematics, and a choice among Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, while the second part has 20 questions on one of subjects amongPhysics,Chemistry, and Biology. Both parts must be completedwithin onehour:Calculators arenot allowed,so it's important to develop thehabit of making drafts and mastering techniques like simplifyingterms. The NSAAis very similar tothe CambridgeEngineering AdmissionsAssessment (ENGAA), so practicing with ENGAA past papers can be helpful. The first part consists of moderate-level multiple-choice questions,so time management iskey. You need tobequick, decisive, and efficientduringtheexams.

The physics exam at Imperial CollegeLondon consists of30multiple-choice questions,a little easier thantheNSAAquestions. However, unstableinternet connections can cause delays,so it'simportant tofamiliarizeyourselfwiththeonlineexaminterfacebeforehandtoavoidwastingtime.
For me,themost challenging part was the Chemistry andPhysics/Math interviews.Toprepare, you must organizemock interviewsbeforehand, inviting your classmates or external expat tutors tobe the interviewers.Eachinterviewtypicallyhas 2-3questions,and you need to write down your solutions while articulating your thought process.I had prepared fortwomonthsbutIstillfeltnervous during the first Chemistry interview and gave a wrong answerforaconceptbecauseIfocused toomuch on Physics andMath.Takethis asalessontobalance your preparation across all subjects.

My GrowthJourney at Imperial CollegeLondon
In October2024,myjourney at ImperialCollegeLondonbegan.College lifewasentirelydifferent fromhigh school:largelecture halls that accommodate 250 students,lecturenotes availableinadvance,andonline assignments tocompleteonourown...Nonetheless,the WelcomeWeekatImperialhelpedmequicklyadjustto thisnewlearningenvironment.

Most of the courses inthefirst semesterfollowed whatIhadlearnedinA-level,sotheywererelatively easy. However after the Christmas break inthesecondsemester, teachersintroducednew mathematical tools toprepare us forfuture subjects likeQuantumMechanics andElectromagnetism.Things took a more challenging turn.In addition,IchoseMathematicalAnalysis, andthe teachingstylewas quitedifferent fromwhatIwas used to.The professor nolonger used theboard towriteout thecoursecontentbut instead usedit to supplement thelecture notes, making thepace of thelectures much faster. So,instead ofwriting down everything from the notes,Ifocused on recording the examples on theboardtoclarify the logic and keep upwith the professor:Theexercises for eachunit becameincreasingly complex,and1 foundmyself reviewing the lecture notes more frequently.Iknow that in the second year,Iwillface evengreaterpressure, anditwillbearealtestof mywork efficiency andmental strength. That'swhy Iplantopreparemoreduringthesummertoface the upcoming challenges head-on.
Insights into Science Study
To study science, practice is key.Not only does it helpstudentsgetfamiliarwithproblem-solving steps, but it also reveals areas of weakness. However,as things become more diffcult, youmight hit bottlenecks andmayfeel confused, frustrated,or even angrywith yourselfSo,thefirst thing to do is to identify yourgoalwhetheryou canfully understand thequestion.Solvingaquestion often starts by looking at theanswer andworkingbackward to figure out the necessary steps. This method helps you choose theright formula, making the question easiertosolve.

ThomasEdwardJohn Miller

Shanghai, my city of harmony, has been my home for over adecade.WhenIfirstarrived,it was a sprawling metropolis brimmingwith opportunities and challenges. Over time,Ihave witnessed itsremarkabletransformation—a citythathas balanceditsrapidmodernisationwitha conscious effortto preserve and celebrate nature. This duality ofprogress andtraditionmotivatedmetocreatea videothatcapturesShanghainot justasacitybutas ahomewhereharmonythrives.

Theideaforthisvideoisdeeplpersonal.Mysonwas bornhereinShanghai, and as thecityhas evolved, so too has he.Watching him grow up against the backdrop of Shanghai's own transformation has beenahumbling andinspiringexperience. What, for me,was once a city whereIbuilt my career has now becomea nurturing environment where my family creates precious memories. From cycling along the picturesque Huangpu River'swindingpathways to exploringparksthatseamlesslyblendurbandesign withlushgreenery,Shanghaihasoffereduscountless opportunities to connect, explore, and thrive. Creating thisvideo gavemethechance toreflect on the unique character of Shanghai. Its essence lies in its ability to embrace change while respecting its roots—a balanceIhold dear bothasa parent and an educator As part of the Xiehe community,Isee this same harmonious spirit refected in the school environment.Xiehefosters ablend ofmodern educational methods with a deepappreciation for culturalheritage, nurturing students to grow academically, socially, and emotionally. My son's experiencesatSUISPudongrefectthisfusion, much likethecityitself, whereskyscrapersrisealongside serenegreenspaces and traditionalarchitecture.

While producing thevideo,Icouldn'thelpbut be immersed innostalgia, rediscovering pictures and videos of Ethan growing up in Shanghai. These capturedmoments—histentativefirststepsinalocal park, hisinfectiouslaughteraswe cycled along the HuangpuRiver, and hiswide-eyedwonder at the city's iconic landmarks—are treasures that reveal how deeply this city'sharmony has woven itself into ourfamily'sstory. They stand as a testament tohow Shanghaihasnot onlyshaped hischildhood but also enrichedmyjourneyasaparent.Eachmemory is imbuedwiththeessenceofacitythat hasgrown and thrivedalongsideus, forming avibrant tapestryof
shared experiences.
As a completenovicein producingvideos, myidea was to use techniques like time-lapse and splitscreen to juxtapose Shanghai's contrasts. From its towering skyscrapers reaching into the sky to its tranquil gardens andnaturalbeauty,Iwanted to showcase the coexistence that defines this city. These visuals are not merely aesthetic choices but an expression of a deeper narrative—a story of transformation, growth, and harmony. The timelapsesequencesarticularlyhighlghtthvirany of urban life, while slow pans across quiet parks offer a meditative counterpoint.Together, they createa mosaic ofthecity's diverse character. What makes Shanghaiuniqueis its ability tobe both dynamic and grounded. It's a city that celebrates its progress without losing sight of its heritage. Whetherit'sthroughthevibrant culturalfestivals, the meticulously preserved historic districts,or the innovative modern spaces that invite creativity, Shanghai continuously reminds us of the value of balance.Thisharmonyiswhat inspired meto share my storythroughthevideo—tocelebratenot onlythe physicalbeautyofthecitybut alsoitsdeepervalues. Tome,Shanghaiismorethanacityofinnovationand architectural marvels;it is a home where culture, creativity, andcommunitythrive. It isaplacewhere my family andIhavefound our rhythm, where the vibrant present and promisingfuture coexistwith a rich cultural past.Living here has taught me to appreciate contrasts—the juxtaposition of old and new, fast and slow, bustling and serene. These lessons resonatenot just in the city's streets but in the wayIapproach life, parenting, and teaching. Producing thisvideohasalsoledmeto embark ona newcreativeendeavour—theSUISStorytellervideo series at our school. This initiative encourages studentsto sharetheir loveofreadingwith the widercommunitywhilegiving metheopportunity to continue creatingcontent that represents ourvalues. AsIlook ahead,I amdeeplygratefulfor what Shanghai has given me—not just a place to live, but a city that has enriched my life and continues toshapemy son'sfuture.TheXiehecommunity is an extension of thisharmony, nurturingyoung minds toembracediversityandaspirefor excellence. Through this journey, I've come to realise that Shanghai's greatest gift is its ability to inspire us to grow, connect, and dream. It truly is,and will always be, my City of Harmony.

Showing the Most Unique City in China
By: Liam Austin, SUIS Shangyin and why doI choose to live in this Chinese city. Shanghaihas amix of traditional Chineseculture, but alsohasenoughwestern clubs and organizations soI neverreallyfeelhomesick.
I wanted to makea uniquevideo promoting the city of Shanghai and my true feelings about it.1 wanted the video to be a unique video. Often foreign influencers will comment onthings likethe food, thesafety, the convenience and thetransportation, but those things are praising China asa whole,so I wanted to find things Ifelt were unique to the city ofShanghai, even though Shanghai also has those things mentioned above.SoIasked myself, what can Ido inShanghaithat Imight not have in other cities,

WhenIfrst moved to Shanghai, my first job was at SUIS Shangyin.Iremember being surprised at how many western teachers in the campus were from Canada.Immediately after joining,so many coworkers started asking me"Liam why don't you come join the Shanghai Hockey Club".At first I felt realynervous, because althoughI comefrom Canada,IneverreallyplayedIceHockeyasachild. IthinkIplayedoneyearwhenIwasinKindergarten. Iremembertrying itafew times againas ateenager, but in Canada it is very intimidatingto pick up this sport at an olderage.Everyone is so good and it is hardto get involved as abeginnerIamso thankful for thepersistenceofmySUIScolleagues, because afiter one year in Shanghai I decided to give it a try. Thevery first skateIwas greeted by peoplefrom China,Canada,America,Finland,Japan,Sweden, andevenUzbekistan.NobodycaredthatIwas a beginner.Everyone made sureIfeltwelcome and thenI completelyfell inlove with this sport and the Shanghai Hockey community. My second year I was asked tobea team captain and by my third yearmy teamhadwon theShanghaiHockey Club championship, which is proudly known as"The Shangley Cup".After that season I was voted onto theexecutive committeeandhelpedmanagethe league and keep it goingfor several years.
This story is a good example of how Shanghai, butalsoSUIShelpedmetry somethingnewthatI otherwisewouldnothavetried.AsaresultIfound awarmandwelcomingcommunitywithinthis wonderfulcity.IceHockeyissomethingveryspecific, but Iknow Shanghaihas other small communities centered around a commonhobby or activity. All the major world sports such as soccer, basketball, baseball, ugby, cricket, andevenAmericanfootball alsohavesimilarcommunitiesthatexistwithin this city.In the last twoyearsIbecame aware of a ratherlargeperforming arts communitywhich is howI got involved in acting and movies. These communities were an inspiration for this video that Ifeel is unique. Most peopleknow that China is safe, hasgoodfood, aconvenient metro, andaich culture, butalotofpeopleinsideChinaandoutside arepleasantlysurprisedwhenItellthemabout these communities that exist in this city.
