CAI GAOCHAO & CAI LISHENG:

Wenzhounese Father-Son Cultural Relay

in France

Source: Wendu News; Editor: Zhuge Fangfang

Cai Gaochao and Cai Lisheng (Thomas Cai), a father and

son from Wenzhou, share not only a striking resemblance

but also a deep passion for Chinese culture, despite their

vastly different upbringings - the father born in Wenzhou in

1956 and the son in Paris in 1996. For decades, Cai Gaochao

has been teaching Tai Chi to over 200 French people and

introducing them to authentic Chinese cuisine such as spring

rolls, “knocked fish soup” (a traditional Wenzhou fish dish),

and zongzi. His dedication has even earned him features

in French magazines and on television. Meanwhile, his son

Lisheng has taken up his baton, serving as the president of the

French Chinese Youth Association (AJCF) for two consecutive

terms. He rallies fellow young Chinese born and raised in

France to explore their roots and foster China-French cultural

exchanges, making their voices heard. Thus, the father and son

are promoting cultural communication in France in their own

ways. One generation after another, overseas Wenzhounese in

France support the cause of cultural exchanges, with the latest

generation now in the spotlight.

Spreading the Art of Tai Chi: Cai Gaochao’s French Media

Sensation

In 1989, the Cai family settled in Paris, France, where

Gaochao, like many of his fellows from Lucheng district,

first worked in the catering and clothing industries and later

ran a grocery store. Long-term fatigue took a toll on his

health, with severe lumbar disc herniation once leaving him

bedridden for three months. His mother, who stays in China,

advised him to return and try traditional Chinese medicine

treatment. This was how Gaochao began to apprentice to

practice Tai Chi for fitness. As he learned Tai Chi, his body

stiffness was gradually relieved.

Back in France, Gaochao made Tai Chi practice in a

park his daily routine to avoid a relapse. Unexpectedly, this

brought him his first French Tai Chi student, Ingrid, which

marked a new starting point for his career in France. At

first, Gaochao merely taught Ingrid Tai Chi in his spare time.

He then began his full-time teaching career when Ingrid

suggested he do so after the Japanese restaurant he worked

in closed down.

His efforts have not gone unnoticed as he was later

introduced by Roger Ltier, president of the Comité National

Français du WuShu (lit.‘French Martial Arts Committee’),

to be a Tai Chi teacher at the Chinese Culture Center of

Les Temps Du Corps, and other French sports and culture

associations, officially starting his career as a traditional

Chinese cultural ambassador in France. At his busiest, he

taught 16 Tai Chi classes a week. Over the years, he has

trained over 200 French Tai Chi students, with many learning

with him for over a decade, some even aged 83. “Many of my

students are in their 70s and 80s but still keep learning Tai

Chi,” he said.

Therefore, Gaochao, a Chinese Tai Chi teacher in

France, has gained attention from local media. In 2009, his

story of leading 400 people to practice Tai Chi at the 104 Arts

Center was featured in France’s largest TV program and

magazine Télérama. French TV channel TF1 also once aired

a report about him.

Sharing the Taste of China with French Tai Chi Students

In 2020, Cai Gaochao participated in China’s Global

Tai Chi Online Competition and won two first prizes in the

overseas group. In addition to teaching Tai Chi, Gaochao, an

amateur painter, even once held a solo painting exhibition

in Paris in 2017. The exhibited 43 Ebru paintings were

mostly bought by his students, who often describe him as

“incredible and versatile”.

Gaochao spent a decade teaching the 108 moves of Tai

Chi, starting from the most basic moves for beginners. His

patience has earned him a solid reputation, leading to a

steady increase in the number of students.

“Why do so many people learn Tai Chi with me for more

than a decade?” Gaochao found the answer in his students’

appreciation for Chinese culture, something for which he

is always grateful. Therefore, he loves to show his culinary

skills when hosting “team building” sessions at his students’

homes. This is their way of enhancing friendship and

spreading the culture.

His delicious Chinese cuisine never fails to impress his

French friends. During the Dragon Boat Festival, Gaochao

will make zongzi, accompanied by the story of Qu Yuan, an

ancient Chinese poet said to have inspired the festival. He

would also organize a Wenzhounese festive celebration by

teaching students how to make spring rolls, knocked fish

soup, and Wenzhou fish ball soup.

Cai Gaochao, now 67, plans to retire. He has a thick

commemorative album containing messages and postcards

from French students. His many years of teaching have

brought him deep teacher-student friendship and a large

group of French friends. Chinese culture is also wellreceived among his French students because of him.

From Father to Son: Cultural Relay of a Bilingual Post-95

Now, his son Cai Lisheng will take over the baton and

continue to promote China-French cultural exchanges in

France. Born and raised in France, this 27-year-old can speak

fluent Chinese and write beautiful Chinese characters.

As a child, Lisheng often went back to China with his

parents. He studied for two years in a Chinese primary

school. Moreover, his grandfather, a veteran Chinese

teacher, rubbed off on Lisheng, enabling him to lay a

good foundation in Chinese and develop strong bilingual

communication skills for cultural exchanges. During his

college years, Lisheng chose to intern at a French art and

culture exchange center, promoting the Chinese-French

exchange of ballet.

“Every time I return to my hometown, I feel it

has changed a lot, but I can still relate to it,” Lisheng

said. Wenzhou’s old downtown area is small and wellorganized, featuring a balance between the mountains and

waters. Beyond the old town, Wenzhou as a whole is a place

with a profound historical and cultural heritage, which

makes him feel particularly proud. “I feel a close affinity

with my city,”said Lisheng. He loves Chinese songs, Chinese

programs, and Chinese calligraphy. These traditional

cultures have given him a lot of nourishment and also a

Chinese identity.

Lisheng does not speak much Wenzhou dialect in

France, but he will naturally talk in the dialect once he

returns to his hometown. This makes his grandmother

especially happy because her grandson, born and raised in

France, can speak Wenzhou dialect. When visiting the World

Wenzhounese Home, a place built for the returned overseas

Chinese, Lisheng was “deeply touched”by a Wenzhounese

idiom“zao gai ci ci” (come back home and take a look).

Now, Lisheng works as an engineer in the French

railway sector and is also actively involved in social activities.

In early 2020, he officially joined the AJCF and was elected

president of the association in 2021 and 2023 successively.

“The older generations have paved the way for us, and

we, the younger generations, are well integrated into all

walks of life in France,” Lisheng said. He hopes to unite his

French-born Chinese peers and not forget where they come

from. As the AJCF president, Lisheng has organized various

traditional Chinese cultural events, such as Chinese

laborers’tomb sweeping on WWI Memorial Day and

exhibitions on Chinese labor history. On Aug 25, 2023, he

was invited for a keynote speech and an interview on behalf

of overseas Wenzhounese youth at the China (Zhejiang)

Overseas Chinese New Generation Innovation and

Entrepreneurship Conference.

As an outstanding post-95 overseas Chinese, Lisheng has

the honor to meet leaders of both China and France. During

the Chinese New Year in 2023, he was invited to attend

the reception at the Elysée Palace, where he had a smooth

conversation with French President Macron.

At the same time, his father, Gaochao, had multiple

performances at AJCF’s Chinese New Year gala. In such a

context, Gaochao said happily, “In spreading Chinese culture

in France, we are having father-son duo’s efforts.”

ABOUT OU 瓯说

The She ethnic group in Wenzhou have a special passion

for beauty. Poor as they were in the past, whether travelling

downtown or visiting relatives, women old and young used

to adorn themselves in exquisite headdresses and costumes

embroidered with intricate patterns, making them stand

out from the crowd, and often attracting admiring glances

from passersby. Nowadays, they become wealthy, and pay

more attention to primp themselves. One typical thing of

them is to style their hair into a phoenix bun, which involves

twisting the hair into a bun at the back of the head, and tying

it with a red string.

HEADDRESS-JI (KNOWN AS “GIE” IN SHE LANGUAGE):

According to historical records, She women used to tie

their hair in a phoenix bun, and wore a Ji on it. Ji is a crown

made from cut bamboo wrapped in a piece of red cloth,

which with gorgeous patterns is adorned with strings of

colourful peppercorn-like beads hanging profusely from

the crowns. Wearing the traditional Ji on the phoenix bun

is a sight of great beauty. In 1991, one of the Ji accessories

was found in Lan Jiazhan’s home in Zuoxi Village, Taishun

county, Wenzhou. It was brought by Lan’s mother from her

hometown of Xianju Shuyuan Village when she was a bride.

The bamboo tube, wrapped in red cloth, is about 16.67cm in

diameter and 23.33cm long. On each side of the red cloth,

there are 10 long strings of small beads that reach the knee,

and 10 short strings of beads on the front of the cloth with

a small silver piece at the end of each bead string. The

number of 10 was used to imply perfect marriage and life in

China.

TALL HEADDRESS: After China carried out the policy of

reform and opening up, promoted by the “Double Third

” She Culture Festival(falling on the third day of the third

lunar month) in Wenzhou, the She singers began wearing

tall headdresses when performing She songs and dances.

COSTUMES: The typical upper garment of She women

and girls in Wenzhou features a large and right-buttoned

placket with a round and low collar. On the garment, there

are pattern like “golden seal” on both cuffs, brilliant pattern

on the chest panel, and also red ribbons. All those make it

unique. The garment is usually made of high-quality twill in

black, dark blue, and dark green.

Based on textual research, the pattern on the cuffs is

formed by embroidering with red and yellow peony flowers

in the shape of half a square which is about 10cm wide. It

is said that this is the golden seal mark bestowed by the

empress of Emperor Gao Xin to her daughter, the third

princess, upon her marriage to Panhu, also know as the Lord

of Loyalty and Bravery, the ancestor of the She ethnic group.

On the chest panel, there are intricately embroidered

patterns of flowers, birds, animals, and words with gold

thread, such as “百年好合” implying blissful marriage, “五谷丰登”

signifying abundant harvests, or “ 五 世 其 昌 ” representing

prosperity for generations to come. These vibrant and

exquisite patterns not only showcase the creativity of She

girls, but also serve as a reminder for couples to cherish

each other, strive diligently, and fulfill the aspirations of a

harmonious and prosperous family.

Two red ribbons on the upper garment, each about

3.3cm wide, extending all the way to the hem, are used to

adorn the right edge of the coat. As one walks, they flutter

elegantly resembling the tails of phoenixes. It is also said

that they were also bestowed by the empress upon her

daughter’s marriage. Serving as talismans of everlasting joy

and good fortune, they symbolize the emperor’s and the

empress’ nostalgia for their married daughter.

The She ethnic group’s headdresses and costumes

are a reflection of their cultural heritage, as depicted in

its historical song “Gao Huang Ge”, which mentions the

beautiful phoenix costumes worn by the She people from

Phoenix Mountain in Guangdong Province.

SHE TROUSERS: The She trousers in Wenzhou are designed

for practicality, with a focus on comfort and durability. The

waistband is embellished with a white cloth about 10cm to

16.7cm wide. Both men and women wear similar styles, with

a few females’ trousers stand out with embroidered flower

patterns, reflecting the shared labor responsibilities within

the community.

SHOES: Traditional She footwear includes cloth shoes with

round or flat mouths, typically made of cyan or blue cloth.

Women wear embroidered bridal shoes on their wedding

day.

APRON: The She people’s apron is worn by both genders

while working, serving as a kind of protection to shield

clothing from stains and tears. In the past, during the cold

winter, when the She family faced financial hardships and

lack of clothing, the apron doubled as an extra layer of

warmth.

On June 7, 2008, with an approval by the State Council,

the costumes of the She people were included in the second

batch of the National ICH List.

On November 12, 2019, the She costume project was

included in the list of national ICH representative project

protection units.

The headdress and costumes of the She ethnic group

are important symbols and represent one of the key

characteristics that distinguish them from other ethnic

minorities. Since the She culture was included in the

national ICH protection catalogue, the She people have

been more self-confident. In today’s society, it is all the

more necessary to design headdresses and costumes with

outstanding She symbols that are relatively uniform and

deeply cherished by the She people in this new era.

雷国贵说,畲族人万事皆可唱:日常对话可彼此对唱;

LEI GUOGUI:

Dual Heritage Inheritor of the She Ethnic Group

by Weng Qinlun

On the third day of the third lunar month in 2005, Lei

Zixin, a She ethnic singer, invited many She villagers from

nearby areas to his home in Chiyanzhai Natural Village,

Zhuli Village, Zhuli Township. There they sang, danced, and

gathered around long tables for a festive meal. This gave

birth to the Ouyue Double Third Festival in 2006, which has

been held annually on the third day of the third lunar month

alternately in the four above-mentioned counties.

Lei Guogui, 49 years old and the son of the late Lei Zixin,

follows in his father’s footsteps. He is not only a municipallevel inheritor of She folk songs, but also a county-level

inheritor of She ethnic costumes.

Recently, our reporter has been to the remote Zhuli to

interview him.

Returning to Hometown to Advance She Ethnic

Costumes

Nestled in the secluded mountains, Chiyanzhai Natural

Village comprises just two households, one of which is Lei

Guogui’s. He lives in his old house built by his father, a

carpenter, 40 years ago.

The She ethnic group in Wenzhou live in four counties, Wencheng, Cangnan, Pingyang, and Taishun; in Taishun, they

reside in Siqian, a She ethnic town, and Zhuli, a She ethnic township.

Zhuli has a population of over 3,000, with the She ethnic group making up about one-third. As a She ethnic township, it is

the birthplace of the Ouyue Double Third Festival of the She people.

It is a traditional Taishun wooden structure known

as “Taishun Dwelling”, consisting of the main hall and

side chambers. In the front yard, lilies, perilla, and an

array of other plants flourish. Outside the yard, rice fields

and bamboo groves spread out on both sides, while lush

mountains rise across the way. Such a location is truly

tranquil and natural.

However, only Lei Guogui lives in this spacious building

because his family members have long settled in Hangzhou.

He has been working away from home since he was 16,

engaging in industries like fashion design and renovation

projects. Two years ago, he returned alone to develop She

ethnic costumes.

The main hall is filled with numerous mannequins

adorned in various styles of She ethnic clothing designed

by him. Meanwhile, one of the side chamber has been

transformed into a fabric processing workshop.

“Do you feel lonely living in your old house away from

your relatives?” the reporter raised the first question.

Lei Guogui smiled, “No. Many of my childhood friends

drop by and we occasionally sing together to kill the time.”

Adapting She Attire — A Symbol of Ethnic Identity

The She ethnic group primarily reside along the

southeastern coast of China, in provinces such as

Guangdong, Fujian, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, and Anhui. Having

migrated from Fenghuang Mountain in the Chaoshan

region of Guangdong several hundred years ago, they

refer to themselves as “Shanha”, “meaning guests from

the mountains”. With approximately 800,000 members,

the group ranks 20th among China’s ethnic minorities by

population.

However, in Lei Guogui’s view, not only do most Han

Chinese know very little about She culture, but many She

youths also lack understanding of their own traditional

heritage. This is one of the major reasons he returned to

promote She clothing.

He added that She people prefer black and blue colors,

and their fabrics are mainly ramie cloth woven by She

women. Overall, their attire tends to be quite plain. Men’s

is mainly long robes, while women’s is relatively more

elaborate, featuring a right-side opening and colorful trims

on the collar, cuffs, and right front panels. The trims are

imaginative creations of She women, without a fixed pattern,

but often featuring familiar floral and plant motifs. Another

important element is She people’s totem, the phoenix.

In 2023, a major online gaming company under NetEase

and She people of Taishun jointly designed a costume called

the Phoenix Outfit for the game “Naraka: Bladepoint”. Then

the latter concertedly produced a physical version. The

fusion of fashion and tradition yielded stunning results,

sparking many young people’s interests in She ethnic attire.

This has also spurred Lei Guogui to think further, “We

aim to preserve traditional She elements, but we mustn’t

be tied down to tradition. Traditional She garments were

too plain and lacked modern appeal.” Over the past two

years, he has boldly innovated traditional attire, introduced

live-streamed sales in his old house, and established Sheyu

Clothing Studio.

The studio remains the sole in Wenzhou dedicated to

producing She ethnic costumes. His clientele spans from

nearby Cangnan and Pingyang to farther regions such as

Lishui, Jinhua, Zhangzhou, and Quanzhou.

Lei Guogui has created jobs for several She clothing

artisans in the vicinity.

Singing She Songs on and on

Lei Guogui’s profound connection to his hometown

stems primarily from his childhood experiences with She

folk songs.

When young, he often heard his father sing She songs.

His father would sing while building houses and would also

invite many friends over in the evenings to sing together at

home after a hard day’s work.

Lei Guogui explained, “For She people, everything can

be sung — we sing to have daily conversations; we sing

to express our emotions like happiness and sorrow”. In

Lei’s early years, his father and his father’s friends would

gather to sing, sometimes continuing from dusk until dawn

whenever they felt like it. It was in such an environment that

he learned to sing She songs.

The She ethnic group have their own language but lack

a written script; so, they pass down their folk songs mainly

through an oral literary tradition.

As the fourth-generation inheritor of She songs in

his family, Lei Guogui has amassed over 20 handwritten

songbooks from his father and other elder singers, and has

collected more than 1,000 songs.

Back in his hometown, Lei Guogui, much like his

late father, invites friends to sing together during his free

time. He hopes local She people will pass down the songs

generation after generation.

Once known as the “Number One Mountain in Southeast China”, Yandang Mountain is acclaimed as “one of the most

wonderful scenes on earth”. Featuring steep peaks, cascading waterfalls, gushing springs and secluded caves, it is magnificent

and rugged. Xu Xiake (1587-1641), a renowned ancient Chinese geographer and traveler praised it with the line “Only an

immortal can fully explore the wonders of Yandang Mountain”. The mountain began to flourish in the Tang Dynasty (618-907)

and reached its peak in the Song Dynasty (960-1279).

As a crucial scene of the Oujiang River Landscape Poetry Road, Yandang Mountain is rich in culture and art. When I

attempt to take a picture of the mountain, I would like to make an exploration into its cultural essence contained in its natural

landscape. My photography is a process of rediscovering and reconstructing traditional Chinese landscape and its culture.

Following such an idea, I reproduced Yandang Mountain on photos, which boasts both a lifelike outer shape and an inside

poetic soul.

Peaks and Rocks

Viewed from afar, the grandeur

of the landscape is striking, with

peaks like Yitian Peak at Lingfeng

and Lianyun Peak at Dalongqiu rising

in clusters, undulating and majestic.

Admired up close, the countless peak

forms, varied commanding cliff walls

and exposed rock textures look aweinspiring.

Clouds and Water

The verdant and crimson crags of Yandang Mountain rise sheer to the sky; babbling water carves brooks on the rock;

waterfalls spout in midair and fall to the lake below, which are shimmering with the clouds in the sun.

Sometimes haze and mist, like ribbons, billows over numerous steep peaks. Clouds gather and dissipate, and water winds

and meanders. The breathtaking scenery inspires a wealth of landscape poems from scholars and men of letters.

Wenzhou’s Xingrenfu:

A Delicious Cool Quencher

By Yan Qiong

For Wenzhou people, a summer without Xingrenfu is

not complete. The snack is mainly composed of sliced and

iced agar with milk or coconut juice, assorted fruits, sugar,

water and a little of mint liquid. It looks colourful and tastes

cool, tender, sour and sweet with a mint fragrance. Eating a

cup of Xingrenfu can quanch your thirsty from the summer

heat. Coming with each mouthful of the special drink is

coolness and refreshment!

As the summer heat intensifies, the iced Xingrenfu

emerges in snack shops and night stalls along Wenzhou’s

streets and alleys, as well as market stalls.

Typically, the first step of making Xingrenfu is to place

a small quantity of agar in a pot and simmer it with water

until fully dissolved. Then, condensed milk or coconut juice

is added to it. Once cooled, it is placed into a refrigerator for

further solidification. After a few hours, a white milk jelly

with a tender texture would be obtained. Then, it is sliced

into small and thin pieces.

At a drinking shop, it is usually blended with offered

canned fruits for you to choose from. such as chilled

yellow peaches, oranges, grapes, coconut pulps, lychees

and pineapples. If “doing it yourself”, you can adopt fresh

fruit instead, and then mix pure water or sugar water with

cut agar, black sesame, raisins, dried bayberries, and a

hint of mint liquid, which can reduce the extra sweetness

and makes the drink cooler. Pour them into a glass. A few

gentle stirs will make you mouth-watering, and eat a cup of

Xingrenfu will bring you coolness.

In Wenzhou, cold drinking shops have almost

disapeared owing to the catering industry development.

Xingrenfu could only be found at night snack stalls, and

various small restaurants, and fried food shops as an

accompaniment. However, a new kind of cold drinking

shops centered around Xingrenfu is on the rise. These

shops offer the snack throughout the year, and also a wider

range of fruits, such as dragon fruit, watermelon, mango,

hawthorn, dates, and goji berries. Nevertheless, despite all

these changes, the authentic taste of Wenzhou Xingrenfu

remains unaltered.

As one of the most favorable and typical cold drinks

in Wenzhou, Xingrenfu could go with other dishes. On hot

summer nights, while you are chatting, savoring breeze

and enjoying dishes, such as crayfish, “bubble” (a skewer),

and pot-stewed food, with your close friends, there’s

nothing quite like adding a cup of Xingrenfu to enhance the

refreshment even more!

WENZHOU SPREADS CHINESE CULTURE

Source:Wenzhou News

“ I’m fond of being an on-ship overseas Chinese

culture ambassador. I will treasure up and spread my good

memories of Wenzhou in my navigating the world to let

my friends know the oriental city,” said Janowicz Tomasz,

Captain of the Panamanian LPG Tanker Syros, temporarily

berthing at the Petrochemicals Terminal on Xiaomen Island,

Wenzhou.

On the LPG Tanker Syros, one large cabin was made

into the first “On-ship Chinese Culture Communication

Center” in Wenzhou. On August 6, the center became lively.

Here, at the invitation of the Cooperation and Exchange Base

“Amazing”,

for Overseas Chinese Cultural Communication (CEBOCCC),

Captain Janowicz Tomasz and the rest 22 crew members

from Poland, Russia, Ukraine, and other countries became

on-ship overseas Chinese culture ambassadors. Here, the

seamen viewed the Chinese knots, Ou embroideries and

folding fans laid out by Wenzhou youth boarding the ship,

and experienced Chinese intangible cultural heritages (ICH),

such as tea ceremony and Chinese calligraphy, as well as

Wenzhou’s customs related by the local youth. Chinese

culture left a good memory on the foreign crew. And there

were friendly interation and exchanges between the sailors

and the local young men.

Disembarking the vessel, the crew members visited

Yueqing City (county level) and ICH product making

craftsmanship during their stay in Wenzhou, which is made

possible by the implementation of the 144-hour visa-free

transit policy, and Chinese culture promotion by the the

Wenzhou Entry and Exit Frontier Inspection Station. At

the local ICH museum, the sailors closely observed local

handcraft works, such as the Shoushilong, a large-sized

festive ornament framed with wood and bamboo and heavily

decorated with strings of shining lanterns (or lamps), as

well as silk and others in a riot of colours. It has a boat with

a movable dragon head and tail as base, on which sits a 5-7

storeyed house with upward eaves. In the house, driven by

hidden wood gears, finely-carved wooden ancient figures

can do even various jobs, such as plowing and spinning

... Looking at the dazzling and marvelous work, the crew

member Petrov Kirill felt stunned and awe, exclaiming, “The

work is amazing! How extensive and profound the Chinese

culture is !I have to take pictures of them and share the

images with my family and friends.”

A captain plays a crucial role in disseminating the

Chinese culture by sea. Captain Janowicz Tomasz, a Polish,

has been to China 12 times. It is the first time that he has

come to Wenzhou, where he has met with many surprises,

which includes not only the city’s murmuring waters,

magnificent mountains and green environment but being

an on-ship Chinese culture ambassador. It is a very special

experience to him. “It is helpful to an expat seafarer’s job

of shipping to expose to a different culture. To be an onship culture ambassador is a very good initiative and we are

honored to be part of it.”

It is learned that nearly a thousand ships enter and exit

the port of Wenzhou every year. This year, the WEEFIS and

the Wenzhou Marine Silk Road International Communication

Base (WMSRICB) jointly established the CEBOCCC. By

inviting Wenzhou youth to board foreign ships in Wenzhou

and foreign crew members staying in the city to disembark

and experience the charm of the city, the base established

an “On-ship Chinese Culture Communication Center” and

appointed “overseas on-ship Chinese culture ambassadors”.

The move has achieved good results in spreading Ouyue

culture and Maritime Silk Road culture to the world through

foreign ships sailing to major ports around the world.

Currently, a group of oversea Chinese culture

ambassadors, consisting of 312 prominent Wenzhou-born

overseas Chinese leaders, influential figures, foreigners

and others, as well as 500 related international volunteers,

are making efforts to enable the world hear the voice of

Wenzhou. Now, with addition of on-ship Chinese culture

ambassadors, stories of China and Wenzhou will be more

artfully told to the world as Wenzhou is a crucial node

city along the Marine Silk Road, and its global cultural

communication has been relying on its international

navigation for thousands of years.

produced by the Wenzhou News Media Center, Wenzhou

Vocational and Technical College, and Wenzhou University,

won first prize. In addition, the Publicity Department of

the CPC Wenzhou Municipal Committee was recognized

as an outstanding organizer, while the Wenzhou Bay New

District Administration Committee, the Longwan District

CPC Longwan District Committee were awarded excellent

co-organizers, with Wenzhou University of Technology

receiving the academic support award.

Wang Dingfu, Deputy Party Secretary of Wenzhou

University of Technology, emphasized that to tell China’s

story artfully, we should focus on the themes with Chinese

characteristics, and offer cinisized solutions to worldwide

issues. We should broaden our international perspective,

highlighting the big picture through minor figures,

significant events through everyday occurrences. We should

well tell china’s stories to see that the world can not only

hear and understand them, but also perceive China as a

trustworthy, lovable, and respectable nation.

At the award ceremony, Zou Jinlei, a member of

the standing Committee of the CPC Longwan District

Committee, delivered his acceptance speech. He highlighted

that Longwan will continue to artfully tell its stories

featuring local culture, and in collaboration with national

mainstream media, to push a dynamic, beautiful, and happy

Longwan and Wenzhou to the rest of the world by leveraging

digital and online tools, and opening official or private social

media platform accounts overseas. These initiatives will

provide new channels for the world to better understand

both places, he added.

canteens serve warm meals at a low price to seniors,

bringing them convenience and happiness; on football

fields, gifted young players are awaiting Bole (Chinese

spelling, meaning a talent scout) to discover them; and the

intangible cultural heritage project for “Maimai Liquor”, a

cherished local brew, is demonstrated. These compelling

narratives paint a picture of Wenzhou’s humanities, history,

and societal progress, allowing the world to gain deeper

insights into the city.

On June 2023, the China National Contest for the 2023

ICCCATCS kicked off in Wenzhou, drawing global focus and

attracting experts, media figures, and international friends

to Longwan of Wenzhou. Along with them came nearly 100

news agencies, which offered a golden chance for Wenzhou

to tell its stories.

Taking advantage of the contest held locally, Wenzhou

enhanced its creation in its stories and transmitted them by

the Internet and digital technology. Most stories are related

to humanities and human life. Now, Wenzhou is more

determined to create higher quality, more passionate and

captivating stories to deepen exchanges and mutual learning

between Chinese and foreign civilizations.

The city has succeeded in organizing three consecutive

Regional Contests (Wenzhou) for the ICCCATCS. The move

to better tell the stories of Wenzhou, China. At present,

the city is proactively exploring more effective global

Located on the southeastern coast of China, Wenzhou

boasts a unique geography and long coastline. What is most

impressive is the city houses 223,300 hectares of diverse

wetlands, ranking among the top in Zhejiang Province.

Renowned as a paradise for birds and home to seashells

and algae, the city has recently been nominated by the

State Forestry and Grassland Administration to the Ramsar

Convention secretariate for its international wetland city

accreditation.

The international wetland city title signifies a city’s

efforts and pinnacle achievements in wetland conservation

and ecological civilization protection. Since February 2021,

led by the Wenzhou Municipal Natural Resources and

Planning Bureau, the city has focused on establishing five

standards for international wetland city and constructing five

key systems according to requirements of the Convention.

The city has been exploring approaches with Wenzhou

characteristics to wetland protection and restoration.

Wenzhou was born in a place rich in water, which is

a catalyst of its development. Its natural wetlands offer

inherent advantages. The city boasts a protected wetland

area of 136,000 hectares with its conservation rate of 61.09%.

In addition, the city's wetland ecosystems are continually

improved in quality and functions.

In 2022, led by the local Municipal Resources and

Planning Bureau, Wenzhou established the first prefecturelevel Red Mangrove Research Center in the country, and

concluded Zhejiang Province’s first red mangrove carbon

trade. Wenzhou’s efforts in restoring red mangrove in the

most north in the country were recognized as a national

model for marine ecosystem conservation. These practices

were reported on CCTV’s program of “News Investigation”,

enhancing the city’s reputation as a coastal wetland

paradise.

Last September, an expert assessment team from the

National Forestry and Grassland Administration visited

Wenzhou. During their stay in the city, they indicated from

their own experience that Wenzhou has attached great

importance to wetland protection and achieved remarked

results in constantly improving wetland ecosystems. In

November, during his investigation in Wenzhou, Deputy

Director Yan Zhen of the same national bureau highly

affirmed the city’s planning for building a coastal wetland

city with a thousand-kilometer coastline, ten thousand

hectares of waters, and three clean rivers.

In February 2022, Nanji Islands were designated as a

wetland of international importance, which made it the

second world-class wetland in the province after the Xixi

Wetland, and the first marine-type one. Last October saw

wetland of national importance. Currently, Wenzhou boasts

one wetland of international importance, one wetland

of national importance, and eight wetlands of provincial

importance.

As the saying goes, “birds decide the quality of a

wetland.” Through effective conservation and management,

Wenzhou ensures the migratory routes of East AsianAustralian birds within the areas under its jurisdiction

remain unobstructed. The city now boasts over 300 rare

species of birds like Curlywing Pelican, Saunders’ Gull,

Great Egret, Black-faced Spoonbill, Chinese White Stork,

Red-crowned Crane and others. The city’s Sanyang Wetland,

and Dongtou’s North and South Mountain ridges have been

designated as top bird-watching spots in the province.
