芜湖，通江达海，自古繁华。唐宋时即楼台森列、市声若潮 ;

明清徽商逐梦，浆染尚芜；近代开埠通商，米市崛起、商贸繁荣，

“长汇巨埠，皖之中坚”蜚声海内外。

建筑，“石头的史诗”“凝固的音乐”。大批古今辉映、中西

交融的优秀文物建筑矗立在岁月长河中，映照着她绵延厚重的

千年文脉和多元开放的文化基因以及奔腾向前的城市气场。

以砖瓦为笔，蘸时光为墨，将这座城的故事娓娓道来……

Wuhu, a city on the bank of the Yangtze River and with an easy access

to the sea, has enjoyed prosperity since the ancient times. As early as in

the Tang and Song Dynasties, it was already a center of impressive urban

houses and bustling markets. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, a

booming size dyeing industry came with the rise of Huizhou merchants; In

early contemporary times, Wuhu was made a Treaty Port, which brought in

thriving trade and commerce and consolidated its reputation at home and

abroad as a \"major port along the Yangtze and the economic backbone of

Anhui\".

Architecture is often known as the \"stone epic\" and \"frozen music\".

Standing in the long river of history are a large number of outstanding

cultural relics and buildings that blend the East and the West and allow the

ancient and modern times to add radiance to each other. They reflect the

city’s continuous and rich millennial cultural context, diversifi ed and open

cultural genes and forward-surging momentum.

Now, with bricks and tiles as a pen and passage of time as ink, the history of

the city is going to be presented to us.

▽虽经千年变迁︐人们仍可透过古建︐翻阅沧桑︐在斗拱层叠的砖石古塔︑气势恢宏 诗人林逋游经芜湖时︐生动描绘了所见鱼米之乡的繁荣︐以及山中藏寺院的幽静︒

▽﹃风消樯碇网初下︐雨罢鱼薪市未收︒更好两三僧院舍︐松衣石发斗清幽︒﹄北宋 \"The wind and rain stopped. Fishing

boats moored and began net-fi shing. The

market town is still alive with selling fi sh

and fi rewood, but I prefer the scattered

monasteries in the hilly forest, where

moss-covered pines stand in peace and

elegance.\" When the Northern Song

poet Lin Bu traveled through Wuhu,

he vividly described the prosperity of

the famed land of fi sh and rice and the

seclusion of the monasteries hidden in

the hills.

Despite the enormous changes in the

past millennium, people can still read

the vicissitudes of history and listen to

the echoes of the distant past in the

intricately bracketed brick and stone

pagodas, the imposing platformed front

gate of former government office, and

the exquisite Jiangnan residential houses.

One of the earliest existing ancient pagoda

buildings in Anhui, it lies sandwiched

between the two mountains respectively

named Phoenix and Unicorn and there are

three other local sights with a gold-related

name.

六角仿木楼阁式砖塔，斗拱均为鸳鸯交手，九层，一层边长 4.9 米，

塔高 38 米，逐层内收，其结构造型凝重稳定，庄严挺拔。

A hexagonal pavilion-style imitation wooden brick pagoda, it stands 38 m high,

with nine layers, each side measures 4.9 m at ground level. Joined together mainly

by Mandarin duck-shaped brackets, the layer- by-layer tapering structure appears

dignifi ed, stable, solemn and upright. 古韵悠长

Wuhu Guangji Temple Pagoda, also known as Zhe (ochre)

Pagoda, is listed among Wuhu’s Old Eight Views the \"Mistshrouded Ochre Pagoda on Sunny Day\".

Many other ancient sights are hard to find now, but the

magnifi cent pagoda still stands tall and upright. At its foot,

you can not help imagining the thriving riverside city in the

past -- \"strategic point to control the river traffi c, overlooking

fl eets of merchants ships and the picturesque city, although

often obscured by mist following a rain.\"

楼阁式砖石结构，六角五层，一层边长 3.8

米，塔高 27.1 米。塔身、檐、椽、斗拱、

窗等装修均为砖砌仿木式样，砖塔檐下装

饰简易的双抄华栱正是宋塔常见特征之一。

塔体自下而上，逐层收分明显。每层每面

隐出直棂窗或辟有拱券门，相错安置；墙

面均嵌有佛像、莲花等纹饰的砖雕，装饰

效果极佳。塔内结构为交错布局的穿心式

台阶、回廊式塔室。

A pavilion type brick structure, it is hexagonal with

fi ve layers. Each side measures 3.8 m in length. The

body, eaves, rafters, brackets, windows and other

decoration of the 27.1-m-tall pagoda are woodimitating brickwork. The simple double protruding

Huakung under the brick eave is one of the common

features of a Song Dynasty pagoda.

From bottom to top, the pagoda body tapers layer

by layer. Hidden mullion windows or arched doors

on each side of each fl oor are staggeredly placed; The

wall is embedded with Buddhist images, lotus designs

and other brick carvings, producing great visual

effect. The pagoda also shows a staggered layout

of through-the-core steps and cloister-type inner

structure.

六角七层，楼阁式砖木结构，底

座为方形转角倚柱。一层塔身外

壁边长 3.6 米，内壁边长 2.3 米，

塔高 28.6 米。塔刹由覆钵、圆光、

仰莲、宝盖和七层相轮组成，高

5.8 米。覆钵上有阳文行楷铭文。

塔的第五层内壁存有“大宋国宁

国府宣城县”字样的捐输碑。

A hexagonal seven-storied, pavilion style

brick and wood structure, its rests on a

base of square corner columns. The 28.6

m high pagoda has a 3.6 m outer wall at

ground level, and a 2.3 m inner wall. The

steeple is composed of an inverted bowl

top, Buddhist halo, lotus flower petals

patterns, ceremonial canopy and seven

layers of xianglun discs, in a total height of

5.8 m. The inverted bowl top is inscribed

with characters cut in relief in regular

script. On the inner wall of the fi fth fl oor

of the tower body, there is a donation

tablet with the inscriptions \"Xuancheng

County, Ningguo Prefecture of the Great

Song Dynasty\".

Front Gate of

Government Offi ce

It is one of the only two surviving high terraced

buildings in Anhui (the other is at Mingjiao Temple

in Hefei City). The Qing Dynasty Kangxi edition of

the Annals of Wuhu County describes it as \"Fairly

magnificent, the first gate of county government

offi ce.\"

采用高台建筑形式，台基石质为花岗岩，基脚有 57 厘米高的须弥

座，台基中间留有 4.2 米的门空，台基之上是木结构房屋，前后有廊。

衙署前门现存木结构为 5 架，明间为抬梁式，稍间为穿斗式。

A high terraced building, it rests on a 57-cm-high granite Sumeru pedestal. In its

middle there is a 4.2 m gate. Above the granite base stands the wooden structure

house, with corridors both in its front and back. The former government offi ce

front gate still has fi ve frames of wooden structure, consisting of a lifting beam

wood frame style main room and chuan-dou style wood frame side rooms.

现存建筑为同治十年 (1871 年 ) 重建。2012 年 6 月，安徽省人民政府将

大成殿合并入第一批省级文物保护单位―米芾芜湖县学记碑和明刻李阳

冰谦卦碑。

The existing building was rebuilt in the 10th year of during the Tongzhi era of the Qing

Dynasty(1871). In June 2012, the People's Government of Anhui integrated the Dacheng

Hall into Mifu Wuhu County School-building Tablet and Li Yangbing Qiangua Tablet, as the

fi rst batch of Provincial Cultural Monuments.

A lifting beam wood frame style architecture topped with a Gable-on-hip

roof of multiple eaves, it is 22 m wide,15.3 m high, covering a construction

area of 273.84 m2.

Xu Clan

Mansion

It is the former residence of Xu Wenda, the salt

commissioner of the north and south regions of the Huaihe

River and the surveillance commissioner of Fujian. His son

Xu Naiguang once served as the senior diplomatic envoy

of Qing Dynasty to the United States, and his nephew Xu

Naichang a famous scholar in modern times.

现存建筑为两层走马楼，坐北朝南，四合院式，东西对称，由耳房、前楼、天井、

后楼及楼梯间组成。面阔五间，建筑面积 951 平方米。

The existing building is a two-story Zouma tower, facing south, symmetrical east and west. It

consists of side rooms, the front tower, the patio, the back tower and the stairwell. Five rooms

wide, it covers a construction area of 951 m2. 古韵悠长

穿斗式建筑，粉墙黛瓦，三进二层，建筑面积 2318 平方米。大门居中，门内

设有深八尺的倒座、门廊，建筑格局为“三间四耳倒八尺”，正方如印、天井

狭小、独门独户，是一处规模宏大、布局合理、气势非凡的“一颗印”民居。

A chuan-dou style building of white walls and black tiles, it is three rooms deep in two fl oors,

covering a construction area of 2,318 m2. The front gate is in the center, behind it there are

an eight-feet deep north-facing room and a porch. The building shows a rigidly square design

of \"three main rooms and four side rooms and an eight-feet north-facing room\". The isolated

building also has a small patio and is a typical \"Chinese seal\" type residential house of a large scale,

reasonable layout and imposing manner. 古韵悠长

▽走进静默在江边山间的它们︐依稀可闻曾经的繁华市声︒ 汉之间︐此为巨擘︐新机日辟︐文化遂郁郁彬彬︐人才蔚起﹄︒ 员帮办楼︑海关关廨大楼等建筑︐于是﹃外商纷至︐轮舶云集︐内外转输沪︑ 岸︐芜湖成为安徽最早开放的城市︒开埠之后︐陆续建有英驻芜领事署︑洋 In 1876, China and Britain signed the Treaty

of Yantai, adding Beihai, Wenzhou, Wuhu and

Yichang as treaty ports, and Wuhu became

the first city in Anhui to open to foreign

trade. Soon, the city saw a rapid emergence

of foreign buildings such as British Consular

Office, Foreign Officer Residence and

Customs House. \"Foreign businessmen fl ocked

in from many a merchant ships, and they also

moved further on to Shanghai and Wuhan. As

a rising commercial center, Wuhu was given

new opportunities and a flourishing culture

environment where talents thrived\".

Approach the silent building and touch the

wheel of history that rolled forward a hundred

years ago.

英国建筑师设计，两层外廊式建筑。坐北朝南，平面方正，东西对称，建筑面积 1190 平方米。隽秀挺拔

的廊柱为青石砍凿而成，与青石拱券组合成线脚丰富优美的立面。壁炉、烟囱、老虎窗设计极具匠心，

使用功能和建筑艺术巧妙融合，具有很高的历史、艺术价值。

Designed by the British, the veranda style building is a two-story brick and wood structure. Facing south, it is square in an eastwest symmetry, covering a roofed area of 1190 sqm.The handsome vertical columns are hewn from bluestones and combined

Architectural

features

青砖砌筑，四坡瓦楞式铁皮屋面，木构架支撑屋顶，砖石墙体承

重，两层，平面方正，立面雄浑，西面和南面设置券廊，地坪上

设置架空层，防潮通风。室内装修以石膏线顶棚为主，线脚丰富

华美，建筑面积 713 平方米。

A work of bluestone masonry, it features a four-slope corrugated iron roof,

rested on a wooden frame. The masonry wall bears the weight. The twostoried building is square with solid facades. Corridors are seen in the west and

south. An elevated layer is built over the ground fl oor for ventilation and against

moisture. The interior decoration is mainly seen in the gypsum line ceiling, and

rich and colorful molding. The total construction area is 713 sqm.
