Sacred Theatre:
Parallels between East and West at the White Elephant Pagoda of Wenzhou

Summary:
Although many similarities between
the ancient Mediterranean and ancient
China can be attributed to travelers along
the Silk Road, others are more coincidental. Such is the case for a pair of Northern
Song statuettes from the White Elephant
Pagoda, now on display at the Wenzhou
Museum. These two sculptures seem to
be out of place among the many contemplative sculptures of Buddha and the
more traditional bodhisattvas. They are
dressed in the colorful robes of theatrical
performers, and they wear animals as
hats; one wears a pig-hat, and the other a
rabbit-hat. As out-of-place as these characters may seem to be, however, there are
some striking parallels between these
statuettes and the art of classical Greek
and Roman theatre. In my talk, I will be
using the traditions of the West to explore
some possibilities for interpreting these
two sculptures, focusing particularly on
the half-human, half-animal satyrs of
ancient Greek comedy.
