We have come a long way since the early

days of KOMPAN. What began in the Danish

artist Tom Lindhart’s cellar in the 1970s has

now moved into purpose-built headquarters in

Odense, offices worldwide and a huge factory

in the Czech Republic, from which deliveries

are sent every 44 minutes to anywhere in the

world. Whether an entirely new playground, an

integrated play and fitness site or a significant

landmark, we have a solution.

Works of “play”

That original street art, designed to help distinguish

between anonymous blocks of flats, became a focal

point, a plaything, and the artist Tom Lindhardt didn’t

mind. In fact, it was what he’d dreamt of. With the

support of a similarly inspirited entrepreneur, Mogens

Fenne Frederiksen, they formed a company and

started a revolution in play.

As the creators of real outdoor fitness, we commit to and design spaces that challenge and engage all ages and abilities with effective workouts. Exercise and fresh

air are natural partners and the universal formula for feeling good. Today, we are

aware of the positive results of physical exertion. Our 21st-century lifestyles demand

it, but to get it right takes a scientific approach to what to do, how to do it and what

to do it on. This is where research, design and product innovation meet reality. We

collaborate with sports physiologists, physiotherapists, universities and researchers

Unique products and innovation

Our iconic products, or should we say “works of play”, such as the Crazy Hen,

Supernova, Cliff Rider and Spacenet™, showcase our pioneering spirit in design,

combining craftsmanship with a commitment to our Danish design heritage.

KOMPAN was born out of art. Half a century ago, sculptor Tom Lindhardt observed

children playing on his artistic creations. Tom turned the process full circle to allow

playgrounds to become beautiful and timeless, like art objects. In the succeeding

years, along came our market leading scalable and adjustable fitness products that

replicate the functional and effective fitness as we know it from indoor facilities.

The KOMPAN Play Institute has been part of developing, researching and advocating playgrounds for KOMPAN since the 1980s. The institute merges cutting-edge

research in child development with hands-on testing, ensuring our designs inspire

and engage children of all abilities. Our commitment is backed by rigorous documentation, white papers and publications that delve deep into playground-specific

topics. The aim is to ensure children develop social, cognitive, health and creative

skills through our WOW, STAY & DEVELOP design approach. Beyond design, we

offer expert consultancy and advocacy, shaping city planning to prioritise spaces

The highest-quality materials

Playgrounds will have to stand the wear and tear of weather and heavy usage.

A KOMPAN site will look great for years and require little effort or maintenance because only that way will users get as many hours of joy as possible. Therefore, we

use the highest-quality materials that look inviting for decades to come and require

the least amount of maintenance. This is also why our warranties are best in class.

KOMPAN’s Design Studio creates unique, built-from-scratch playgrounds and

fitness sites tailored to communicate something about the community they serve.

These sites are landmarks, as distinctive as a gift of nature or an architectural gem.

Customised solutions

We know that our customers are different and want something different from their

playground or fitness space: aesthetics, thematisation, age groups and number

of children able to play simultaneously. A theme park may want to make a WOW

playground to attract children. A school may want a playground where the children

burn energy, enabling them to concentrate during lessons. A municipality may want

to create an activity site with both a playground and fitness equipment. So, our

architects, landscape architects and designers tailor solutions to your users, your

Inclusive, universal design for play and fitness

Our design philosophy is that everyone should feel included. Play and fitness are

for everyone, regardless of their physical or mental ability. The human need for play,

physical activity and social interaction across abilities is what we plan for. Facilities

that aren’t merely accessible but also inclusive of and usable by all to the greatest

possible extent. Each playground and fitness site mirrors the needs of those who

use it, whether to play, exercise or sit and watch the next generation evolve. Universal, inclusive design means a stigma-free playground for everyone. Read more

Guidance from idea to finished project

Building a playground may sound as easy as playing, but can be a very complex

and complicated process. We are ready to take the burden off your shoulders and

be your partner in the process. We help you find the best products and best layout

for you, your users and your site. We make sure that everything gets to site and on

time, clearing the site, digging out for foundations, installing products, laying the

safe surfacing, and putting in paths, fences, benches etc. With in-house production

in most markets as well as installation, we maintain full control of every project. Our

STAY factor

‘Oh no, not yet’ is the expression we most love to hear in response to the suggestion to

head home. It epitomises the STAY factor. Each time a play feature is approached, it should

be a fresh encounter, open to new interpretation. The STAY factor nurtures social interaction,

inspiring children of all ages and abilities to stay and play longer.

DEVELOP factor

Play is all about fun – well, not all. Behind the laughter, and sometimes tears, it is about

development; personal, cooperative and competitive. The DEVELOP factor is the endless

mission of the KOMPAN Play Institute experts. These specialists craft ways of developing

motor skills, coordination and balance. Intellectual learning is equally vital, with cognitive

development, communication, language expansion and understanding of how to turn the

germ of an idea into a successful conclusion.

WOW factor

The eyes open wide to capture the full scene, the mouth forms an

O, sucking in more air in expectation of action, the legs run wildly

in search of adventure. This is the WOW factor, the moment of

arrival at the playground that marks out a KOMPAN design from

Play is vital for child well-being and life skills,

be it for a toddler or a teenager. So KOMPAN

playgrounds are carefully designed to motivate

all children to play; to play relentlessly again

and again, while developing important life skills

and also friendships. Children need play stimulation for their physical, cognitive, creative and

social-emotional development. This includes

children with both invisible and visible disabilities. Especially with the rise in neurodiversity

diagnoses. So, our research aims at creating

playground equipment and playgrounds for all:

With action cameras and movement screening,

we study what triggers children to play, and continue playing. We learn what makes children play,

move, talk and cooperate. This informs our product design to stimulate, for instance, social-emotional skills, language and communication.

Science and universities are a major source of

our fundamental research and knowledge. We

cooperate with universities and draw on this

in all product development. The collaboration

takes several forms, such as joint industry PhD

students.

To constantly stay on top of new research,

Playgrounds

4 User

workshops

Children are the experts in what motivates

them to play and what they like to play. Their

preferences develop with age and with cultural

changes. We conduct workshops where children

share their ideas on playgrounds and give us

feedback on our newest ideas.

5 Testing new

play ideas

Prototypes are tested at their earliest stages in

order to prove and perhaps improve their child

and age relevance. This helps fine-tune important basics, like the placing of components and

creating interaction in teamwork.

6 Prototypes in their

natural habitat

When children play in their outdoor setting, and

on their terms, they use play features differently

from a laboratory setting. We install prototypes

in kindergartens and schools to ensure that the

children truly get the benefit we intended, and

that they deserve.

At the KOMPAN Fitness Institute, we use

science to create outdoor fitness equipment

and solutions. Outdoor fitness has traditionally

been based on simple equipment with less

functionality than indoor fitness. However, the

available equipment must provide real exercise

benefits and a positive user experience to

motivate people to exercise regularly.

When developing outdoor fitness products that

provide an optimal exercise experience, we

focus on two key aspects: ergonomics and the

resistance experienced by the user.

The KOMPAN Fitness Institute develops science-based, user

test-informed equipment and design recommendations. It’s where

research, design and product innovation meet reality

First, we gather data from our users through

structured user studies. To enable the best

designs, we conduct methodic research on our

target users to expose problems and design

opportunities by analysing the target audience’s

needs and pain points.

knowledge

Then, we turn to science to deeply understand

our target audiences’ behaviours and needs.

We collaborate with multiple scientific disciplines

within the Faculty of Health Sciences, nationally

and internationally, to uncover all relevant insights and knowledge.

3 Leveraging user research

with user workshops

User workshops are a critical part of our design

process. This is where we gain valuable insight

through usability testing and accessibility evaluations from users in their own environment.

– THE CLIMATE CULPRIT OF CO2e

We are taking significant steps to tackle the #1 climate culprit in our

business: raw materials. The GHG guidance and tools identified the

issues, and then we worked on reducing our emissions. To make

fundamental changes, we needed to look at the entire life cycle of our

products. It is a continuous journey for us. This is how far we have come:

KOMPAN chose the Greenhouse Gas Protocol

to focus our efforts on the areas with significant impact on reducing our carbon footprint.

We found that approximately 80% of the

carbon emissions were a result of the use of

raw materials in our production of playground

and fitness equipment. We turned data into

action, and from 2024, we can now make

colourful playgrounds with 95% recycled materials, using post-consumer recycled waste in

HDPE panels, tempered Corocord™ rope with

EcoYarn™ and TexMade™ posts.

Tempered Corocord rope with EcoYarn™

Our Corocord ropes are designed for optimal strength, abrasion resistance and

all-weather durability. These ropes are made to withstand vandalism, ensuring

longevity and safety in various environments. The ropes are tightly wrapped with

EcoYarn™ in >95% post-consumer recycled material, which is melted onto each

individual strand. This process enhances the rope’s durability and significantly

reduces waste. Corocord ropes are available in eight colours and six dimensions

(7mm, 16mm, 19mm, 21mm, 22mm, and 23mm) and cater to different needs while

maintaining their environmental benefits. Depending on the size, the ropes have

either a steel or fibre core, ensuring optimal application performance.

HIGHEST QUALITY

MATERIALS

Galvanised steel

Our steel surfaces and steel frames consist of a hot-dip

galvanised inside and outside with lead-free zinc. The

galvanisation has excellent corrosion resistance in outside environments and is maintenance free.

Robinia wood

Robinia wood is a very strong and long-lasting material

with a very high level of natural oils. Thus Robinia wood

makes durable playgrounds which are close to maintenance free and able to last for many years.

WARRANTY

We have industry-leading warranties

Warranty coverage

This warranty applies to KOMPAN’s products for the time periods described for

each product type above and with the limitations described in this warranty. The

warranty period applies from the date of purchase by the first customer. This

warranty covers only defects in materials, production errors and structural integrity failures caused by defects in design, materials or manufacturing. KOMPAN’s

liability under this warranty is limited to repair or replacement of defective products, without charge, at KOMPAN’s discretion.

Proper installation and maintenance

The warranty only applies if KOMPAN’s products have been installed according

to the instructions provided by KOMPAN and maintained correctly according to

the KOMPAN Maintenance Manual. All warranty claims shall be accompanied by

full documentation for proper installation and maintenance.

Warranty exclusions

This warranty does not cover any damage caused by accident, improper care,

negligence, normal wear and tear, surface corrosion on metal parts, discoloured

surfaces and other cosmetic issues or failures due to misuse or vandalism.

Natural changes in wood over time are considered cosmetic issues and are not

covered.

Near water installations

Products installed in direct contact with chlorinated water or saltwater (water

parks), or products installed within 200 metres from the shore are not covered by

the KOMPAN warranty for any defects caused by corrosion. Specially designed

products (handled via the department for customised products), provided they

have been upgraded to corrosion class C4 prior to delivery, installed within 200

metres from the shore (and not in direct contact with saltwater/spray of saltwater

or chlorinated water, e.g. water parks) shall, subject to the applicable warranty

period for each product type set out in the general warranty, be covered only

against structural failure caused by corrosion (excluding moving parts) and under

no circumstances for any period longer than 10 years.

Third-party supplied products and services

KOMPAN provides non-KOMPAN branded products and installation services

performed by certified third-party suppliers. This general KOMPAN warranty

does not apply to such non-KOMPAN branded products and installation services, which may carry their own warranties. KOMPAN will pass on information on

such warranties where possible.

Global transport and logistics arranged by KOMPAN’s appointed forwarder.

Products/items are not to be stored outside while waiting for installation and

must be kept dry at all times.

1 Pre-installation

site visit*

We begin with a site visit to ensure the area is

ready for installation. This includes checking

access for trucks, bobcats or cranes and clearing

old surfacing or equipment. We’ll also map

underground utilities such as water, gas, power

and drainage and clear any roots, trees or plants.

Excess soil may also need removal, potentially

affecting installation time and cost.

2 Installation

process

Our professional installation covers project supervision, safety surfacing, landscaping and assembly. For safety, all equipment must be installed

by trained experts following local regulations and

KOMPAN’s strict guidelines.

3 Post-installation

to confirm every detail meets safety standards.

KOMPAN also offers inspection services for

equipment last longer. Regular inspections

help address minor issues before they become

The first sketches are made and delivered to you in order to

Your play sculpture is loaded with the portfolio of play features that we have invented throughout half a century.

sculpture

Our engineers make sure that the static structure is safe and

sound. We use the highest-quality materials in order to build

Based on the initial idea, created by skilled designers,

within the urban landscape. It’s a holistic

Space Creation focuses on zoning for yoga,

spinning, strength training or casual hangouts.

The surfaces vary from concrete to artificial

grass, FLEXOTOP™ ECO or wood, offering

flexibility and comfort.

A multifunctional wall frames the space

as zoning for strength training, cardio or

functional training. The back side of the

wall acts as a divider, providing privacy

with solid or open structure options.

Stairs offer tiered seating and access to

the platform, which is ideal for socialising

or resting. Elegant posts support ambient

lighting and shading, creating a tranquil

and intimate atmosphere.

TODDLER’S PARADISE

PLAY SOLUTION

The Toddler’s Paradise is a safe world of play for

toddlers. Shown here in a classic park area, but

it would also suit a kindergarten, a courtyard or a

public square. The playful themes and colours invite

children to play. The play equipment is placed on

different sides of the “river” which adds extra play

stories.

The variation of play equipment provides multiple
