五、阅读理解
Life often deals us a bad hand but it’s up to you to think
to yourself: “I’ve got this. I can get through it.” By the way,
think of how boring you’d be if nothing challenging ever
happened to you — you’d never learn, and then you’d never
change! Every setback (挫折) is an opportunity for us to turn it
into a success.
“It’s not what happens to you in life, it’s what you do
about it,” says Mitchell, a self-made millionaire, a famous
speaker, and a former mayor. And he accomplished all this
after his accident.
If you saw Mitchell you’d find this hard to believe. You
see, having gone through a plane crash, he was paralyzed and
changed beyond recognition.
After the terrible accident, Mitchell recalls meeting a
nineteen-year-old patient in the hospital. “This guy had also
been paralyzed. He had been an active outdoors person, and
he was convinced his life was over. Finally, I went over to this
guy and said, ‘You know something? Before all this happened
to me, there were 10,000 things I could do. Now there are
9,000. I could spend the rest of my life dwelling on the 1,000
that I lost, but I choose to focus on the 9,000 that are left.’”
Mitchell realised he did not have to buy into society’s
concept that one must be handsome and healthy to be happy.
“I am in charge of my own spaceship,” he states confidently.
“I could choose to see this situation as a setback or a starting
point.”
Although most of our setbacks won’t be as severe as
Mitchell’s, all of us will have our fair share. You might get
dumped; you may lose an election at school; you may get
beaten up; you may not get accepted to the school of your
choice; you may become seriously ill. I hope and believe that
you will be proactive and strong in these defining moments.
40. What does the author think of something bad in our
lives?
[A] It should be avoided.
[B] It can be meaningful.
[C] It’s very boring indeed.
[D] It’s very easy to handle.
41. What message did Mitchell mainly try to tell the young
patient?
[A] Think of what you have.
[B] Never give up your dream.
[C] Always be your personal best.
[D] Try your best to achieve more.
42. What attitude did Mitchell take to the society’s concept
in Paragraph 5?
[A] Unclear.
[B] Confused.
[C] Negative.
[D] Favourable.
43. What words can best describe Mitchell?
[A] Patient and generous.
[B] Smart and humorous.
[C] Honest and hardworking.
[D] Determined and optimistic.
Don't give up and don't give in. 不要放弃,不要言败

五、阅读理解
This morning my family and I went to a friend’s home
to help her get things back in order. She was one of the
unfortunate people whose home was recently destroyed by
a tornado (龙卷风). One side of her home fell off and the
roof was gone over a large part of the house. Torrential rain
fell the rest of the night and all of the next day following the
tornado, creating even more damage to her belongings. The
home is a total loss. Still, there is much that is valuable, and
our job today was to help her sort through the debris and find
anything with actual value that she may want to take with her.
My husband helped to move furniture and other things to
the storeroom while our two younger children helped clean up
the yard. My oldest daughter and her boyfriend helped as well,
and my another daughter with me swept up all of the areas
of debris, sorting it for things that are important. We worked
systematically, clearing the main living space first, then moving
on to the kitchen, laundry area, then the master bedroom.
By the time we were done today, though there was no
denying the home had met with disaster, we had gone far
to restore order from the loss that had been there before.
My thought in entering the day was that our friend, who
had been having trouble sleeping, was being affected by that
loss negatively. I hoped that if we could restore order, she would
finally start to feel some sense of peace and her mind would
quiet and allow her the much-needed rest she so deserves.
She posted on Facebook just a little while ago that
for the first time she was sleeping at night. For me, what a
wonderful and deeply meaningful way to begin the New Year!
41. What does the underlined word “debris” in Paragraph 1
mean?
[A] The dust caused by tornado.
[B] Something that is valuable.
[C] Something that the owner needs.
[D] The remains of something destroyed.
42. How many children does the author have at least?
[A] 5. [B] 4. [C] 3. [D] 2.
43. What can we learn from the passage?
[A] The author’s friend has no family.
[B] The author’s family did much to restore order.
[C] The author’s friend couldn’t sleep well owing to the
loss.
[D] The author’s family managed to help her friend rebuild
a new house.
44. What’s the best title for the text?
[A] Way to Help Friends
[B] The Love from Friends
[C] The Loss after the Tornado
[D] A Way to Welcome the New Year

A Powerful Team
This is a story of two friends — one is blind, the other
has no arms. Although the two are “disabled”, they are a
powerful team together. They have changed part of their
village in North China’s Hebei Province into a rich, green
forest. Their story began in 2000. Haixia was blind in his
right eye. Wenqi lost his arms in an accident.
Neither could find a job, so they decided to team up.
They rented (租) some poor land and began to plant trees.
Haixia and Wenqi never imagined that they would
create an environmental paradise (天堂). Their forest now
has over 10,000 trees, hundreds of birds and many other
wild animals. It also saves the village from river flooding
during the rainy season.
When the friends work together, they focus on their
strengths not their disabilities. Their day begins at 7 a.m.
Haixia carries Wenqi across the river to get to their work
place. Since they cannot afford to buy young trees to plant,
the two use branches (树枝) from trees. Haixia climbs to
the tree-top and picks up the perfect branch. He then digs a
hole and plants it carefully. Finally Wenqi waters the tree.
The two men don’t make much money but they are
proud of themselves and they still work hard. As Wenqi
says, “We stand on our own feet, so the fruits of our work
taste sweeter.”
Neither Haixia nor Wenqi cares about money. As a
team, they already have everything they need — a perfect
pair of eyes, two strong hands, and the best friendship in the
world!
